Foreign national to contest Sri Lankan election for the first time

A German woman who has obtained Sri Lankan citizenship has entered the race for the upcoming Local Government Elections in the Matale District, marking the first time a foreign national is contesting a local election in Sri Lanka.  

She hopes to bring positive change to Sri Lanka through her political involvement

The woman has placed her deposit and is set to contest for a seat in the Galewala Pradeshiya Sabha under an independent group.   

Speaking to the media after submitting her deposit, she stated that she hopes to bring positive change to Sri Lanka through her political involvement.  

Election Commission Chairman R.M.A.L. Ratnayake confirmed to Daily Mirror that, according to available information, this is the first instance where a foreign national is contesting a local election in the country.  

Meanwhile, the Election Commission is expected to announce the date for the Local Government (LG) elections today (20).   

According to sources, the elections are likely to take place in the first week of May.
