More than 46,318 people in 15,000 families in the Ampara District have been displaced due to the prevailing massive flood threat. Ampara District Secretary Chinthaka Abeywickreme said the displaced people were provided shelter and urgent relief including cooked meals at several welfare centres. e said Brigade Commander 24 Brigade Mjr.Gen. Wipula Chandrasiri has made arrangements to provide transport to students appearing for the Advanced Level examination by military trucks.
Ampara ASP Hemantha Seneviratne said Life Guard teams were deployed to rescue the people marooned by floods.
Senanayake Samudra in Inginiyagala had reached its maximum capacity of 770,000 acre feet by last morning due to the incessant rain experienced in the Bibila area that formed the catchments of the reservoir.
Director of Irrigation, Ampara District H.P.B. Bandara said all the five spill gates in the reservoir were opened to release excess water. He requested the people living in low lying areas of Galoya river to be cautious of any possible danger.
