President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said yesterday he took action to hand over the report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) into the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks, including the documents hitherto concealed, to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation.
Speaking at an election rally in Polonnaruwa, he said some sections of the PCoI report had been concealed without revealing to the society or handing over to the CID.
"I sent all the reports including the hidden documents to the CID for investigations. If not for the NPP government, those documents would still be hidden," he said.
The President said, for the last five and half years since 2019, previous governments aspired to suppress the investigations and hide the mastermind of the attacks.
He said the NPP government was taking action step by step to bring all those responsible for the attacks before the law and added that some of the actions have already been taken.
The President pointed out that investigations have been launched into some controversial incidents such as to ascertain who used the mobile phones recovered with IMEI numbers and also to find out who dumped a jacket in the spot where two police personnel were killed in Vavunathivu.
He said the NPP government will take the responsibility of revealing the real culprits of the Easter attacks and that it must be done.
