Police said the use of mobile phones among prisoners in the Galle prisons has been on the increase and going on unchecked and that 546 mobile phones used by the detainees had been seized for the last three months.

DIG Galle Division Jagath Sarem said he requested the Commissioner of Prisons to raise the rear wall of the prisons with an iron net fence and install a CCTV camera. He said he decided to convene a monthly progress review meeting to take up security of the prisons.

Meanwhile SSP Galle, Kelum Tilakaratne said the prison officers were facing a security issue and that he would take steps to deploy a STF team to enhance security in the prisons.

Police said four detainees had been injured in a clash between two groups and admitted to Karapitiya Teaching Hospital last week and that they were transferred to Boossa High Security Prisons after being discharged from hospital.
