In an obvious swipe at US President Donald Trump over the US-Israeli war on Iran, Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith said all nations are suffering today because of selfishness of one man who wants to rule the world.
Speaking during the Easter Vigil service, Cardinal Ranjith said these leaders cannot be called Christians considering what they are doing today. “This leader, who is the head of the most important nation in the world, is showering bombs and causing so much destruction to his neighbours. He calls himself a Christian. Christians cannot do what he is currently doing,” he said.
“True leaders have to be servants of the people according to Christian doctrine. A leader cannot run after power, especially if he is a Christian. Christians are called upon to love others and work for the betterment of others.
One cannot embrace individuality, consumerism and money. Adolf Hitler tried to become the supreme leader of Europe. What was his fate?” the Cardinal questioned.
The Cardinal therefore urged all Catholic devotees in Sri Lanka to pray for peace. “Let’s ask God to change the mind of this power-hungry leader,” he also said.
