Boyfriend remanded for threatening to leak girlfriend’s nude videos

A young man, P. Kumaran, was ordered to be remanded till September 3 by Colombo Additional Magistrate Manjula Ratnayake, on allegations of threatening to share nude video footages of his girlfriend on social media.

According to the complaint lodged with the Children and Women’s Bureau by the young woman, she and the suspect had been in a romantic relationship for some time. During this period, on one occasion when they were engaged in sexual activity, the suspect had videographed the incident with her consent.

The complainant alleged that the suspect had later threatened her via WhatsApp messages, claiming that he would release the videos on social media.

The suspect was arrested and produced before court on charges under Section 2(a) of the Obscene Publications Act No. 22 of 1983, for possessing obscene video material with the intention of distribution.

Appearing on behalf of the suspect, Counsel Udayanga Munaveera told court that the videos had been made with the mutual consent of both parties and requested that his client be released on bail. Having considered the submissions, the Magistrate rejected the bail application and ordered that the suspect be remanded till September 3.
