New linear accelerator costs Rs 800 Mn
By Sheain Fernandopulle
Responding to claims made by the Government Radiology Technologists Association regarding the malfunction of three out of the five linear accelerators at the Maharagama Apeksha Hospital, the hospital management clarified the situation.
Chanaka Dharmawickrama, the association’s chairman, stated that this breakdown has disrupted radiation therapy for approximately 250 patients daily. As such, he urged the authorities to take immediate action to restore the functionality of the machines and resume treatment without further delay.
However, Apeksha Hospital Director Dr. Aruna Jayasekara told Daily Mirror that only two machines have malfunctioned, one of which needs to be replaced due to prolonged issues.
“One machine will be back in operation by tomorrow after being repaired while one machine is completely out of order. In the meantime, we are in the process of acquiring a new machine, which costs Rs 800 million,” he stated.
