President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is reported to have  informed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the elections to the  Provincial Councils will be conducted after the local authorities’  election, an informed source said.

The representatives of the political parties based in the North and the East met with the Indian Prime Minister and requested him  to prevail upon the Sri Lankan government to conduct the elections to  the Provincial Councils. Which have remained stalled for the past eight years  since 2017.

The conduct of elections to the Provincial Councils hit a  snag over delimitation after the introduction of the new electoral  system, which is a mix of the First-Past-the-Post System and proportional  representation.

The representatives of the parties such as All Ceylon Tamil  Congress (ACTC), Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK) and Democratic Tamil National Alliance (DTNA) attended the meeting.

Prime Minister Modi is reported to have said that he  discussed it with the President, who assured him that the elections would  be conducted in the future after the local government election.
