Ronaldo becomes first player to score at six World Cups as Portugal thrash Uzbekistan

Houston, June 24 (Daily Mirror) - Cristiano Ronaldo etched his name further into football history as Portugal cruised to a 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in their Group K clash in Houston.

The Portuguese captain became the first player to score in six FIFA World Cups when he opened the scoring early in the match, ending a 10-game goal drought at major international tournaments. Ronaldo converted from close range after a pinpoint cross from Joao Cancelo, netting his 144th international goal in his record-extending 230th appearance for Portugal.

Ronaldo added a second before halftime, moving closer to early Golden Boot leader Lionel Messi. The brace also saw him equal Eusebio’s Portuguese World Cup scoring record of nine goals. Nuno Mendes and Rafael Leao got on the scoresheet, while an own goal by Abdukodir Khusanov completed the rout as Portugal bounced back emphatically from their 1-1 draw against DR Congo.
