Tourism Minister Harin Fernando said that India’s External Affairs Minister had encouraged Indians to visit Sri Lanka as “Sri Lanka is a part of India”.
Speaking at an event in Mumbai, Fernando revealed India’s growing involvement in Sri Lanka, the latest being a possible major investment in 3 airports in Sri Lanka.
He also said that life in Sri Lanka is much cheaper than Mumbai and so people in Mumbai should “sell Mumbai and come to Sri Lanka”.

When or where on earth did Sri Lanka become part of India? Did Harin say this ? Or he has misquoted Indian external affairs Minister, saying he said that Sri Lanka is part of India .... how and when did that happen... Whoever said it please get your head examined.

We need to remind our Public Servants that we are not their subjects, they are elected representatives paid by the Republic's money, not to make statements that go against our sovereignty and freedoms. Nobody internally or externally has the right to say that we are part of some other country, politicians collectively would have made Sri Lanka a vassal state of India , China or anyone else.... However we have a constitution, we are a sovereign independent Republic...

Minister for Tourism might be right when he says that Sri Lanka is a part of India because we eat the same food like rice and curry and use the same ingredients to cook. Copy their songs and use their musical instruments our women wear the sari which is Indian and men wear the sarong and have similar names like Kumar Raja Ravi Devi etc. and last but not least worship the same god Gautama Buddha who was born in India.

India doesn't want to commit the same mistakes as in the past. Sri Lanka is our most important neighbour and we want Sri Lanka to stay as a strong, independent country with a flourishing economy where it does not have to depend on any one else. There is so much beauty and history in Sri Lanka and a lot of tourist potential. It's time to build on this potential, starting with people to people ties. A prosperous Sri Lanka is in India's best interests.

Firstly you need to start importing vehicles at least on a quota system, and have a reasonable duty (not 300% ) but a reasonable one where people can purchase a vehicle and the Gov't can earn some duty. 2nd you need to take stringent steps to reduce the ridiculous prices in the used car market. And create an environment where the buyer and seller get a fair deal, at the moment it is sheer madness. Finally have a National Policy on vehicle imports, the max permitted imports and the minimum to max duty , in my opinion no vehicle should be charged over 100% of the CIF as duty, for decades Sri Lankan's have been denied owning a vehicle and enjoying a decent quality of life, they get saddled paying loans and leasing for years, don't deprive the people anymore. We all have the right to have a decent quality of life, not only the politicians and their circles.
