World Wetlands Day is marked today (February 2). Pictures show the Bellanwila-Attidiya Wetland, covering 372 hectares, which is protected as a sanctuary under the Department of Wildlife Conservation. This area is an important urban ecosystem rich in biodiversity in Sri Lanka. Despite industrial waste being discharged into the waterways that flow through the marsh, this once-thriving wetland still hosts many interesting species of birds. Pix by Pradeep Pathirana
