The historic city of Kandy is facing a growing waste problem as thousands of devotees gather for the exposition of the Sacred Tooth Relic at the Sri Dalada Maligawa. Streets around the temple have been littered with garbage, with polythene bags, plastic bottles, and food wrappers scattered along the roads.
Visitors waiting in long queues said they had no proper places to dispose of their litter. A Municipal Council official noted that many people bring snacks, water bottles, and other items for the long wait, but leave their waste behind as the lines move.
“The situation is getting worse every year. People leave polythene bags and plastic bottles on the road, making it difficult for cleaning crews to keep up,” the official added.
Residents and environmental groups have raised concerns, warning that the beautiful city is turning into a garbage dump during major religious events. They are urging authorities to provide more waste bins and run awareness campaigns to keep the city clean. Pix by Shane Senaviranthe

More Bigger Bins Plus Regular Clearing Of Thrash Wednesday, 23 April 2025 09:41 PM
Authorities should have place more bigger bins every 20 to 30 meters apart. Plus hourly clearance of these bins and a general clean up, definitely situation would have manageable after the crowds left. Since this is a issue whenever big events are held, more coordination must be taken.

Sad that the people responsible had not thought and planned for all these eventualities. Instead of 'Dansel' it should be donation of effort to clean all these up. People have no designated places and containers to dispose all this refuse, which appears to be the issue.

We thought that Clean Sri Lanka program took care of the issue already. The rest of the country is not different . It is not just people's habit, it is the lack of proper waste management system in a city that receives a large number of visitors. Clean Sri Lanka program is just a propaganda machine for the No Plan Pacha Party.

Minds of devotees cleaner than those in charge of the relic Thursday, 24 April 2025 06:07 AM
Government must compel those who hold sacred relic hostage to either show it all year long or move it out of Kandy. Currently the limited viewing time is what is causing suffering to the public, who flock to see the relic like lemmings.

One dodgy tooth messes up the whole town. The ignorance of Sri Lankans prevents environmental awareness. In Germany, a fine of between 20 and 150 euros (6800 and 51,000 rupees) would be due for each person, depending on the amount of rubbish.

@ M Fernando. I am a German but I am happy to live in Sri Lanka as a resident and run some companies here. For me it is enough to go on holiday once a year for 4 weeks to my home country to be at the next door to heaven. Of course you can come to Germany like anyone else if you have the right qualifications, but not as a refugee. Just as Sri Lanka benefits from me, Germany is looking for people it can benefit from. But this shoe is probably too big for you.

Not adherering of law and order and not respecting to general norms in the society. Poor family background and no dicipline learnt from parents pave the way to such behaviour when they exposed to society.

Stop this menace right now before its too late. Even if you provide thousand garbage bins, people will be the same as ever. People have now started using nearby drains, ditches and bushes for defecate purposes making the entire Kandy into a stinking city. Implement a system through an app to limit the crowd by giving them a date and time. If that can be done, schools, offices, shops, street vendors will not be affected badly as now.

Typical local mentality: "Let's make mess and keep it for others to clean it". Lessons should be taught from kindergarten levels in Schools to be like in Japan to care and keep the environment and to keep it clean. you are responsible for your action. Old habits never changed, new generation take heed.

When it comes to waste management system, KMC is far better than other cities. They have good system all over the city. The issue here is the outsiders and their mindset plus overcrowding during a event like this. Same situation after every perahara, KMC is well aware of this and must have not expected crowd like this. Inadequate bins, manpower and lack of awareness by people in a small city like this caused much inconvenience to the city people as well. Hope KMC will take note of this and better prepare next time.

Lakmal Kahawela Thursday, 24 April 2025 11:28 AM
Please don't blame the government for the waste management. Its is the Kandy Municipal Council who should take the blame. This municipal council not governed by NPP. They must be doing this deliberately to make NPP unpopular specially because of the upcoming local government elections

NPP government should have known that a small city like Kandy cannot cope up with such a large uncontrollable crowd in the first place. Their lack of awareness and ill management is the major reason behind this menace.

It's very sad to read the comments of these people with high morals. The devotees are are from far away places and spending days with very little or no comforts. It's the organizers who should be blamed for very badly planning. Garbage is a regular issue and this excessive situation is temporary. The authorities should get help from volunteers to ease the situation. The keyboard warriors should contribute to ease the situation not by making huge sentimental comments but some way it can help the devotees and the authorities. Some idiot's comments are really despicable.

Kandy is a small town with limited or no possibility of expansion. To manage queues of people @ 1 lakh each day, 2 vital components need to be in place - 1. An army of volunteers distributing an collecting rubbish bags/bins at 1 hr intervals. 2. Separate mobile toilet facilities at every 100 yards for each gender and removal of waste cleaning every hour. When these are not available or slack, the hell breaks loose, not too dissimilar to India, when we go on pilgrimage.

More than hundred years back large crowds gathered in Anuradhapura during the religious festival of Poson. As a British government agent has observed there was no litter at all after the crowd left the place. Our people behaved very well. We should be ashamed of the present situation.
