Cargills recently conducted the 10th Regional Sarubima Scholarship Award Ceremony in Thamuttegama for the financial year, with the first event held in September 2025.
The ceremony was graced by Mahaweli Authority System H Residential Project Manager Thilak Ranasinghe as the chief guest. The event extended educational support to 112 children from farming families across the region, who are the children of Cargills’ valued farming partners.
Scholarships were awarded under the grade five, Advanced level, vocational and university categories. In addition to financial assistance, university students received laptops to support their higher education and digital learning needs.
Further strengthening its commitment to education and community development, Cargills introduced Smart Classrooms to three schools in the region, Hurigaswewa Vidyalaya, Oththappuwa Maha Vidyalaya and Gurugama Vidyalaya on the same day to enhance learning opportunities for students. Support was also extended to farming families through welfare packages and the provision of subsidised plastic crates for farmers.
This year, over Rs.115 million has been allocated through the Cargills Sarubima programme to support both student scholarships and rural community projects islandwide. Of this, over Rs.50 million has been dedicated to educational scholarships, while over Rs.60 million has been allocated to community development initiatives, including upgraded libraries, smart classrooms, clean water systems, sanitation facilities and preschool infrastructure enhancements.
Since its inception in 2008, the Cargills Sarubima programme has been a key pillar of the company’s corporate social responsibility efforts. It reflects Cargills’ philosophy of working directly with rural farming communities across Sri Lanka and was established to build a deeper connection with farmers and their families, recognising their hard work and contribution to the nation.
Over the years, the programme has benefited hundreds of children and families by improving access to education, strengthening livelihoods and creating opportunities for long-term progress.
