BOI DG Renuka Weerakone retires after 32 years of service

The Board of Investment (BOI) yesterday announced the retirement of its Director General Renuka Weerakone, who served the investment promotion agency for more than three decades.

Weerakone, who retires on June 30, leaves the BOI after 32 years of service, having joined the institution in June 1994 as an Assistant Manager (Legal).

She progressed through a series of senior management positions, including Director, Executive Director and Acting Director General, before assuming the agency’s top executive role.

Throughout her career, she served across several divisions, including investment promotion, project implementation, investment appraisal, regional development and project monitoring, giving her oversight of the investment approval process from policy formulation to project execution.

During her tenure, Weerakone represented Sri Lanka at international investment promotion missions, trade negotiations and global investment forums, while contributing to several inter-agency and policy committees established to improve investment facilitation and resolve implementation bottlenecks.

Outside the BOI, Weerakone serves on the boards of the Export Development Board (EDB) and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Sri Lanka.

She holds professional qualifications as an Attorney-at-Law and later obtained a Master of Business Administration from the Postgraduate Institute of Management of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

The BOI has not announced a successor to Weerakone.
