Sun Siyam Pasikudah: Weaving luxury, culture, and community on Sri Lanka’s East Coast

Nestled on the serene eastern coastline of Sri Lanka, Sun Siyam Pasikudah is emerging not just as a luxury resort but as a beacon of curated experiences, community empowerment, and untapped potential.

In a landscape known for its tranquil, shallow waters and powder-white sands, the resort is scripting a compelling growth story, marked by a significant uptick in occupancies and a visionary approach to hospitality that deeply integrates local culture. This resurgence was recently showcased to a select group of journalists, offering a firsthand look into the property’s ethos, led by its General Manager, Arshed Refai.

Arshed Refai

The resort, a tranquil oasis, a scenic six-hour drive from Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport, is capitalizing on the growing allure of Sri Lanka’s east coast. It presents itself as an antidote to the bustling southern tourist trail, offering a quieter, more profound connection to nature and culture. As Refai explains, the clientele drawn to Pasikudah seeks something different.

“Mostly our clientele when they come, they always want to have a quality relaxing time to themselves,” he notes, highlighting the resort’s commitment to maintaining a peaceful ambiance. This unique positioning has paid dividends, with the resort witnessing a remarkable turnaround from leaner times.

“I have had occupancy like zero for a whole week in the past,” Refai recalls. “Thank God we are not in that level now. We at least averagely maintain a minimum of 30-35 percent occupancy throughout the day, which is actually very good.”

This growth is fueled by a proactive strategy to position Pasikudah on the global stage. Following a recent brand re-launch, Refai personally engaged with top-tier tour operators in Europe.

“It was a good opportunity to talk about Sri Lanka with all the top tour operators,” he stated. This international push is complemented by continuous public relations efforts, including hosting influencers and journalists from markets as far as the United States, which recently resulted in features across numerous online magazines.

An Invitation to Paradise: Special Offers and Market Focus

Capitalizing on this momentum, Sun Siyam Pasikudah has launched a compelling promotion to attract the domestic market, which Refai identifies as its most crucial segment. The resort is currently offering a 30 percent discount on all credit card payments, a deal valid until the end of this year. This initiative underscores a core philosophy at the resort: valuing local tourists.

“Our local market is number one for us,” Refai asserts. “Sometimes people forget the local business when you have European travellers. But my main market and I prioritize Sri Lankans... because that market will never vanish.” The resort further cultivates this relationship through a loyalty program that offers additional benefits to repeat guests, ensuring a strong and sustained domestic visitor base.

Redefining Luxury: Accommodation and World-Class Amenities

The foundation of the Sun Siyam Pasikudah experience rests within its 34 spacious and elegantly designed pavilions. Guests can choose from One Bedroom Garden or Ocean Pavilions, with the option of a private plunge pool nestled within the outdoor bathroom area. These 118-square-meter sanctuaries feature modern interiors, king-sized beds, large corner sofas, and fully furnished terraces offering serene views of the resort’s vibrant gardens or the expansive Indian Ocean.

For families or groups, the Two Bedroom Grand Beach Pavilion stands as the resort’s pinnacle of luxury. This expansive 236-square-meter villa, located directly on the beach, features two master bedrooms, two oversized bathrooms, and a stunning 28-square-meter black slate pool in a secluded courtyard. Every accommodation choice comes with dedicated butler service, ensuring a personalized and seamless stay.

Beyond the private pavilions, the resort’s heart is its glamorous 30-metre, split-level infinity pool. A dedicated children’s area with its own pool keeps younger guests entertained, while facilities like floodlit tennis and badminton courts, a state-of-the-art fitness centre, and “The Studio” for karaoke provide ample recreation. For those seeking tranquility, the Spa & Wellness centre offers a sanctuary with Ayurvedic and reflexology treatment rooms, a hydrotherapy area, sauna, steam rooms, and a beauty salon.

A Culinary Journey Through Sri Lanka and Beyond

Dining at Sun Siyam Pasikudah is an experience in itself, designed to immerse guests in vibrant local flavours and refined global cuisine.

The Kitchen: The main dining venue offers a semi-à la carte experience where appetizers and desserts are served buffet-style, while main courses are prepared to order. The restaurant hosts themed nights celebrating Sri Lankan East Coast cuisine and fresh seafood.

The Slice & Grill: A casual, poolside spot with a retro seventies feel, serving Pizza Hut favorites.

The Tea House: A tribute to Ceylon’s heritage, this venue allows guests to indulge in a luxury tea collection and embark on a guided tea-tasting journey.

The Beach Shack: The quintessential tropical bar, offering refreshing fruit punches and cold beers in a groovy, beachside setting.

The Bar: Designed with a distinct whiskey feel, this is the perfect place to unwind in a bold, relaxing atmosphere.

The resort also offers exclusive culinary experiences, such as a gourmet wine-tasting dinner led by a sommelier and a “Culinary Gastronomy” tour where guests accompany the head chef to a local market to select fresh produce for a personalized lunch.

Championing the Community and Local Culture

Perhaps the most inspiring aspect of Sun Siyam Pasikudah’s operation is its profound commitment to the local community. Over 80 percent of the resort’s staff hail from the surrounding villages. Refai speaks with pride about this initiative, which began during the hotel’s construction phase.

“We want to empower the local community, also support the local economy,” he explains. The resort invests heavily in training, taking individuals from backgrounds like fishing and molding them into skilled hospitality professionals through a robust industrial training program. This approach has fostered deep loyalty, resulting in an exceptionally low staff turnover rate.

This commitment extends to a new, immersive cultural program called “Sri Lankan Roots.” Planned as a weekly event and offered free of charge to all guests, it aims to showcase the island’s rich heritage. The experience will feature live demonstrations of traditional food preparation using tools like the millet stone, coconut sambal making, and toddy tapping.

To further support the local economy, the resort will provide a free platform for local artisans to display and sell their handicrafts during the event. The day will culminate in a traditional Kandyan dance performance, offering guests a holistic cultural immersion. “We want to showcase every week to all the guests... get the guest also to get involved,” Refai says of the initiative.

Commitment to Sustainability and Community

Sun Siyam Pasikudah’s dedication to its home extends beyond economic empowerment to active environmental stewardship. Recognizing that the pristine marine environment is its most valuable asset, the resort is embarking on a crucial Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative to revive and protect the local coral reefs.

“We are looking at how we can regrow all the corals,” Refai confirmed, detailing a forward-thinking coral replanting program. This is not a superficial effort; the resort has recruited a marine biology expert to lead the scientific study and ensure the project’s long-term viability. The initiative is being handled with immense care, as the team is consciously avoiding publicity until the newly planted corals are mature enough to withstand visitor interaction, preventing any unintentional damage to the fragile ecosystem.

This hands-on conservation work is complemented by a strong focus on community education. The resort collaborates closely with government bodies such as the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) and the Coast Conservation Department (CCD) on awareness programs. A key example is their joint activity on World Environment Day. “We bring down the school children... show them the values... to educate the kids,” Refai explained.

During these events, children receive meals at the resort and participate in presentations that highlight the importance of marine conservation, fostering a sense of environmental responsibility in the next generation. These CSR activities are a testament to the resort’s holistic philosophy, where luxury tourism acts as a force for good, preserving the natural beauty of Pasikudah while enriching the lives of its community members.

Pasikudah as a Year-Round Gateway to Eastern Wonders

The conversation with  Refai also shed light on the broader potential of Pasikudah as a year-round destination. Improved connectivity is a key factor. “Cinnamon Air is right now operating the seaplane, which is very good,” he notes, adding that flights now operate continuously, not just seasonally, between Colombo and Batticaloa. This, along with highway developments, is gradually making the East Coast more accessible.

From its prime location, Sun Siyam Pasikudah serves as a luxurious base to explore the region’s treasures. The resort organizes excursions to UNESCO World Heritage sites like the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, the cave temples of Dambulla, and the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Wildlife enthusiasts can embark on a safari in Minneriya National Park in search of wild elephants or head to Trincomalee for mesmerizing whale watching between May and September.

Looking ahead, Refai is keen to develop experiences in largely untouched destinations. He mentions Mahaoya, a pristine area where guests can spot wild elephants, and Thoppigala Heritage Park. Although the infrastructure to Thoppigala is still developing, he sees its potential as a major attraction and is already considering customizing a vehicle for such rugged tours.

With its blend of authentic luxury, deep-rooted community values, and a clear vision for the future, Sun Siyam Pasikudah is not just weathering the tides of tourism; it is actively shaping them. It stands as a testament to how modern hospitality can thrive by honoring its location’s culture, empowering its people, and offering guests an experience that is both indulgent and genuinely Sri Lankan.
