SriLankan Airlines recently stepped forward as the official airline partner of Trail 2016 that is set to take place from October 6 to November 2.
In addition to the airline’s sponsorship, around 600 employees from SriLankan Airlines including CEO Suren Ratwatte have pledged to participate in the challenging 648-kilometre walk, which will start from Point Pedro, the Northern tip of the island, and end in Dondra Head – Sri Lanka’s Southern most point.
Trail was initiated in 2011 in conjunction with the Colours of Courage Trust in an effort to bring communities from across Sri Lanka together to collectively drive the nation’s fight against cancer. The initiative was started by two friends and colleagues – Sarinda Unamboowe and Nathan Sivagananathan.
Commenting on the airline’s support of Trail 2016, Ratwatte said, “As the national carrier, SriLankan Airlines is immensely proud to support Trail 2016, an initiative that not only brings communities together, but also raises funds to treat cancer – a disease that is increasingly affecting so many of our fellow Sri Lankans. This walk across our beautiful island is a challenge that I along with my colleagues look forward to participating in.
I am honoured that I will have the opportunity to walk certain legs of the Trail journey alongside my colleagues. Employees from all levels of our organisation stepped forward and volunteered to join this walk and I believe that their commitment is a testament to the spirit, care and dedication that form the very essence of the SriLankan Airlines brand.”
This year, the 28-day walk will take place with the aim of raising US $ 5 million, which will go towards building a state-of-the-art cancer treatment facility, as part of an extension of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle.
