Lotus Group opens SL’s first export-based private tissue culture lab

A new chapter in Sri Lanka’s agricultural innovation has begun with the establishment of the first export-oriented private tissue culture laboratory by Lotus Group of Companies. 

Located in Dalukgolla, Nikaweratiya, within the Lotus Seeds Farm premises, the state-of-the-art facility was officially opened recently, marking a major milestone in the nation’s journey toward modern and globally competitive agribusiness. 

The inauguration ceremony was graced by Hatton National Bank Vice President Agri Business Deepal Udukumbura, who attended as the chief guest. Many government officials and dignitaries from the agricultural sector also participated, recognising the initiative as a significant contribution to Sri Lanka’s growing agricultural biotechnology industry. Equipped with the latest technological innovations, the new tissue culture laboratory has been established with the goal of producing high-quality, disease-free planting materials for both local and export markets. The facility enables large-scale plant propagation under sterile, controlled conditions, ensuring uniformity, quality and rapid multiplication of elite plant varieties.  Speaking at the opening, Lotus Group Managing Director D.A.M. Janith Abeykoon stated, “This establishment reflects our long-term vision to integrate biotechnology into sustainable agriculture. Through this lab, we are not only supporting farmers and exporters but also paving the way for advanced research in new plant variants and modern cultivation techniques.” 

The laboratory is currently engaged in the tissue culture production of fruit crops such as banana and pineapple, flower crops including orchids and vinca and commercially valuable species like agarwood and aloe vera. 

Further research focuses on expanding the plant portfolio, developing new genetic lines and exploring novel methods to improve yield and quality for export markets. 

With the launch of this export-based tissue culture facility, Lotus Group continues to strengthen its role as a leader in Sri Lanka’s agri-tech sector, combining innovation, sustainability and scientific excellence to shape the future of agriculture.
