Lake House Technologies, one of Sri Lanka’s pioneers in banking card supply and innovation, announced its collaboration with global technology leader Thales to launch the nation’s first-ever eco-friendly biodegradable banking card for the Bank of Ceylon (BOC), powered by Mastercard International.
The card, made from non-edible, corn-based polylactic acid (PLA), offers a sustainable alternative to traditional PVC plastic cards that can take centuries to decompose. Fully industrially compostable, the new card is a milestone in Sri Lanka’s journey towards greener financial solutions.
Lake House Technologies Division, the brainchild of Executive Director Tony Johnpillai, has consistently led the way with many firsts in the banking card industry. With a strong network of global partners and a sizable market share in Sri Lanka, the company has rolled out numerous groundbreaking projects that have shaped the nation’s financial services landscape. “This project reflects our vision to bring world-class, environmentally responsible innovations to Sri Lanka’s banking sector,” said Tony Johnpillai.
“Partnering with the Bank of Ceylon and global leaders like Thales and Mastercard ensures that we are not only meeting the evolving demands of the market but also contributing to a sustainable future.”
With millions of banking cards issued annually, the shift to biodegradable options will help reduce landfill waste significantly.
The new card will be rolled out in phases for both new issuances and renewals, giving customers the option to transition from plastic to a greener alternative without compromising on security, durability, or global payment functionality.
For over a decade, Lake House Technologies has been a trusted partner to Sri Lanka’s leading banks, delivering secure, innovative, and reliable card solutions. The launch of this eco-friendly card with BOC marks yet another historic step in redefining the future of sustainable banking in Sri Lanka.
