The Insurance Association of Sri Lanka (IASL) organised a residential Skill Development workshop for banking and insurance degree undergraduates of the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka recently.
The aim of the workshop was to help the undergraduates to identify and develop soft skills that are essential to get into the corporate environment and establish a career. The programme was designed in such a way that the participants gained insights into the rapidly changing corporate world and to give awareness to the undergraduates to sharpen their skills so that they will be agile and ready for these challenges.
All the participants underwent a MBTI assessment and a feedback analysis by a Certified MBTI trainer. The workshop also included several leadership and management activities, case studies and a mini OBT session. They were also briefed about the insurance industry and the career opportunities in the industry. The programme was facilitated by the Human Resources (HR) Subcommittee of IASL that comprises HR heads of all insurance companies.
Commenting about this unique workshop, a L of the university stated that this was a rare opportunity that the undergraduates received to take part in a residential workshop focussing on soft skills development. He also stated that such programmes will enable the state university undergraduates to gain practical exposure as well as to identify the expectations of corporates executives so that necessary steps can be taken to develop the skills whilst being in the university. The participants also praised the insurance industry for organising such a residential workshop.
The IASL also conducts many career guidance workshops for GCE Advance Level students and undergraduates of various universities every year. During the past few years, the IASL has also partnered with the Wayamba and Sabaragamuwa Universities of Sri Lanka to conduct an ‘Insurance Day’, which has become an annual event of both universities.
The IASL was set up in 1989 to represent the insurance sector of the country. Its Executive Committee, made up of the CEOs of the companies, meets on a regular basis to discuss issues pertaining to the industry, as well as to foster ethical standards and sound business practices within the sector.
The HR Subcommittee of the IASL brings together the heads of the Human Resources Departments of the companies represented within. The main objective of the subcommittee is to collectively work towards the development of the insurance sector of the country as a potential employer. In this effort, the HR Subcommittee has been continuously engaged in conducting workshops and awareness programmes, designed to provide the younger generation of Sri Lanka with the necessary tools to make a successful entrance into the countries workforce.
