The government aims to implement the long-awaited National Single Window for the public sector within the next three years, according to Finance and Planning Deputy Minister Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma.
The initiative is a key focus of the government’s digital economy drive, led by the Digital Economy Ministry, to streamline the service and trade processes within the public institutions.
As part of this effort, Dr. Suriyapperuma shared that the government officials are currently engaging with five industry chambers to identify quick solutions to shape up the broader comprehensive National Single Window.
“There are so many systems available out there. If we bring them into the government structure on a methodical basis, the question of efficiency can be addressed to a great level,” Dr. Suriyapperuma said, speaking at the Sri Lanka Economic Summit organised by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce.
As a recent development, he noted that certain government agencies such as the Import and Exchange Controller have transitioned to paperless operations since January this year.
Additionally, six key regulatory agencies within the Customs Department have been granted direct access to the ASYCUDA system, allowing them to track, monitor and manage their pending container clearances more efficiently.
Regarding public sector staffing, Dr. Suriyapperuma stated that there is a pressing need for skilled personnel despite a hiring freeze in many public institutions.
However, he reaffirmed the government’s strong stance against politically motivated public sector appointments.
“As a policy, we will not politicise these institutions or use them to give jobs. This is the reason why these institutions have become a burden to the country,” Dr. Suriyapperuma stated.
