Cabinet nod to undertake feasibility study for water-based tourism

In a bid to leverage water resources, the Cabinet of Ministers has green lit a proposal to explore the development of water-based tourism and passenger transport services through a public-private partnership (PPP). The decision, approved during a Cabinet meeting, aims to boost the island nation’s tourism sector while addressing urban mobility challenges.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism  Vijitha Hearth envisions establishing boat services along key coastal routes, including Puttalam-Fort, Fort-Galle, and Galle-Matara. Additionally, inland water resources such as Hamilton Ela, Beira  Wewa, Diyawanna Oya, and Madu Gaga will be developed to enhance tourist attractions and infrastructure.   A feasibility study will first assess the project’s viability, focusing on route logistics, environmental impact, and partnership frameworks. If successful, the government plans to collaborate with private entities to operationalise the services, reducing fiscal burdens while tapping into private sector efficiency.

The Government Information Department noted that utilising Sri Lanka’s natural waterways not only supports economic growth but also positions the country as a unique destination for eco-conscious travellers.
