CAA launches islandwide programme to address consumer-related issues

S r i L a n k a ’s s t a t e - c o n t r o l l e d c o n s u m e r protection body – Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) – is to launch an islandwide p r o g r a m m e i n v o l v i n g consumers, traders and government off i c i a l s , a statement said.

“The programme titled ‘Towards the Consumer’ aims to educate the public on issues faced by consumers a n d t r a d e r s as well as the consumer protection r e g u l a t i o n s , ” t h e statement said. In addition, a mobile complaint service will be launched to bring consumers and traders together to resolve the problems quickly.

“The initiative will involve the participation of District Secretaries, Divisional Secretaries, all government officials, trader associations and civil groups.” The first programme for 2016 will be launched in Kandy in mid-March to coincide with the World Consumer Day. The statement said the initiative was conceived by CAA Chairman Hasitha Tillekeratne under the guidanc e of Indus t ry and Commerce Minister Rishad Bathiudeen
