Willing to play a role in the govt, won’t accept ministries: SJB

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) is willing to play a role in the government through parliamentary committees, its leader and Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa said.

“We are prepared to play a role in the government through committees, but do not intend to accept ministerial portfolios. The correct way to play a role in the government is to participate in parliamentary committees and not to accept ministerial portfolios and enjoy perks that come with them,” Mr. Premadasa told the trade union leaders whom he met during the weekend.

“Civil organizations, trade unions and other organizations should come to an understanding on a common program to build the nation,” the Opposition Leader said.

Mr. Premadasa said he will set up a national council bringing trade unions and other civil organizations together next Tuesday. He said the council will function at the Opposition Leader's office.

“All progressive proposals which come up at the national council will be presented to Parliament,” he added. (Yohan Perera)
