Two teenage boys walking along the rail track near Wadurawa railway station early this morning were run over by the Colombo-bound night mail train from Badulla.
The deceased Kavishka Lakmal (18) and S.A.Thiwanka (19) were residents of Waduruwa in Veyangoda.
They were walking along the railway line to Wadurawa railway station to catch the train to go on a picnic.
Investigations revealed that they were talking over the phone without being aware of the approaching train.
Police said the Colombo- bound train changed its track to give way for the on coming train, and the duo assuming the line was free and were walking on the same track and were run over by the metal monster.
Weyangoda police are conducting further inquiries. (Pushpakumara Mallawarachchi)

In Sri Lanka, railway lines are unprotected. Parents should play an important role in the usage of mobile phones. Very sad to read this news. CHILDREAN ARE LIKE GEMS and GOD's Gift.

During the British rules, walking on rail tracks was prohibited just like in other developed countries. After independence, the rule lasted for a few years but died down slowly because lazy Sri Lankan officials could not be bothered to enforce the rule. The same story wirh crossing tracks to change platforms when an overhead pass is available. The lazynesd and poor work ethics played a huge role in diminishing high standards.

What is the use of, "Veyangoda Police are CONDUCTING FURTHER INQUIRIES."!!??? The case is crystal clear to ALL of us Readers!! PURE CASE OF LACK OF EDUCATION OF THE YOUNG, because Police, Elders and Educators have failed and Failed Totally and Abysmally – campaign to educate Youngsters!! The "Railroad" steel track is purely and purpose built Railway system to run and not for Jay-walking, or short cut to station!!?? Railroad operator and equipment, cum operators have SOLE Right-of-Way and all others on the track anytime, morning, noon or midnight – SIMPLY TRESSPASSING ON TRANSPORT SYSTEM!!!? Initiated educating youth earlier, tragedy could have been AVOIDED!!!Lost Golden Opportunity!!! In the absence of warning “ROAMING LIKE ON THE RIALWAY LINE”! YOU DON'T NEED HERCULE POIROT TO REVEAL THAT!!!??Train them on Rail Road Right-of-Way which brings better outcomes!!!???
