‘Sri Lanka Legume’ tree (Crudia zeylanica) which blocked the construction of the Colombo - Kandy Expressway in the Daraluwa area of Veyangoda, was removed with Cabinet approval, Minister Bandula Gunawardane said today.

He told the weekly Cabinet briefing that Cabinet approval was granted as the Cabinet of Ministers observed that it was a waste of money to protect a tree that is commonly available and said that the removal of the tree is a policy decision of the government.

“I called for a report and got to know that there are 15 ‘Sri Lanka Legume’ trees which are over 40 years old and 25 trees that are 12 and 15 feet in extent in the project area. We are planning to plant 200 ‘Sri Lanka Legume’ trees in the area in place of the removed tree,” he said and added that Botanists assured him that any number of ‘Sri Lanka Legume’ trees can also be grown.(Ajith Siriwardana)

Really? Reveal the report - it's authority and competency. Ultimately, this will be said about the last elephant, the last leopard, etc but never the last profiteering,self-seeking politician

I would like to know which clause in the constitution gives unlimited powers to the cabinet to make such statements. Just because the cabinet decides on various matters, is there a clause in the Constitution that enables this?

Makes sense this time. Most of these people protesting to preserve these trees have not planted a single tree in their life time.

The cabinet decides on a tree ..were the experts contacted on why the concerns were expressed ?..or was it just the road factor ??anyway the tree is cut ..and so all reviews on why .would not bring it back would it ?

Constitution allows the cabinet to make decisions on state matters and not to cut trees and buy overpriced petrol and gas.

To up-root the tree how many millions you spent Mr. Minister. Why this waste of poor man's sweat spent in vain?
