Soaring prices in chicken at present is due to the drop in the fish harvest as a result of adverse weather conditions, Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said today.
The Minister told Parliament that a kilo of fish has gone up to Rs. 3,000 due to the prevailing adverse weather conditions.
Responding to a question by MP Samanpriya Herath, he said prices of chicken have been increased due to the high demand as a result of the drop in the fish harvest.
"Production of chicken has not increased in line with the high demand. It is unreasonable to increase prices of chicken by huge amounts. We are taking action to bring down the chicken prices soon," he said.
He said shortage in eggs will also be resolved within three months as production will return to normal.(Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

Lol. Production cost of chicken is high due to high feeder prices. 1kg of feed is around 250. Normally a chicken will need about a minimum of 100g per day and it will cost about 1100 for food alone. Then with other expenses and profit margin the current price seems to be correct. Unless someone runs a free range farm in a huge area without giving much food, this might destroy the chicken industry same like how egg industry was destroyed by this government. Try to find a way to reduce feeder prices or try to encourage free range farming by allocating large land areas to existing farmers.

Fish and Chicken prices have been high for some time even when the weather was good. These are mere excuses given by Amaraweera.

The government cannot control prices of private producers, the only way they could subsidize is by importing. Example the price of local produced milk powder is more expensive than imported ones, same with canned fish. Local products don’t have freight costs and import duty. Can’t blame feed prices (globally) - so if feed prices are much higher than global open market- the feed importer makes the bigger cut. Same with medication. This price issue is now becoming a joke. Businesses are arbitrarily increasing prices and blaming taxes , dollar etc.

This minister should be sent home as he is the main reason for the farmers and the agricultural sector was a disaster. Even today the farmers are having never ending issues based on his promises. Furtilizer not been issued on time. Government funds not released to the farmers . There is no proper price for the paddy. Water not released on time for the farmers paddy fields.There is no proper supervision and instructions given .He has been holding the ministerial position for decades. Just throw him out !!! Replace with a qualified agricultural Research adviser.
