Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa today requested the government to issue a gazette notification declaring Sri Lanka Leopard Day which falls on August 1 as a National Leopard Day.

He told Parliament that August 1 was declared as Sri Lanka Leopard Day as proposed by the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society (WNPS) in August 2021.

The Opposition Leader said Sri Lanka has the opportunity to promote eco-tourism in the country at a time when the country was facing an acute economic crisis.

"We can earn foreign exchange through eco-tourism while protecting the animal species," he said.

Leader of the House Susil Premajayantha said he would refer the matter to the subject minister and take steps to do it as there is a special procedure to adopt when declaring a certain day as a national day.(Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

So everyone will have a day off again? Children are not going to school again? How many holidays do you have in Sri Lanka? Get to work and build up your country!

Before all that, can we make 17th April as Sri Lanka Corrupt Politicians Day? Will you even have the balls to suggest that in parliament? We can reminisce and remember the most corrupt political leaders of this nation from Mahinda to Gota to SWRD.

Every holiday does have negative impact on economy; but unfortunately Sri Lankans including politicians do not see this. Singapore is a multi-national and multi cultural country. I would suggest to look at Singapore's way of selecting holidays. In my opinion newspapers shouldn't publish such news. By doing so, possibilities remain for politicians to reform.

Hey Sajith, it's this type of talk that makes you look weak as a leader. While it's well and good to be compassionate towards animals and wildlife, don't we have more important issues to talk about in parliament (I don't mean opposing all the proposals brought in by the Govt. which you feel obliged to do) Try to be a little more realistic and maybe, people will take you seriously.
