Sri Lanka is to develop a domestic air transportation network linking several airports, Minister of Aviation Nimal Siripala de Silva told Parliament today.

The Minister said the domestic air transportation network will be developed by linking Bandaranaike International Airport, Mahinda Rajapaksa International Airport Mattala, Palali Airport Jaffna, and domestic airports in Trincomalee and Batticaloa. “ Through this, it will be possible to attract high-end tourists if we develop a domestic air transportation network,” the Minister stressed.

“We also intend to expand the runway at Palali Airport with Indian assistance. The expansion will be causing minimal impact to the residents in the area. Our intention is to expand Palali so that it could handle A330 aircraft, This will be done with Indian assistance” he said.

The Minister also said a number of international airlines have increased their flying frequencies to Sri Lanka lately. Accordingly, he said China Eastern Airlines have agreed to fly times a week, Air India 17 times a week and Air Asia 11 times.(Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)

Surely he meant a320 instead of a330, a330 is a long haul plane.

Lanka is a small country, and reachable by road within 3 hours, IF we have good roads.

Most of the tourists who come here are back-packers and it is doubtful whether they would be using this facility as we find most of them stay at private accommodations advertised over the internet at nominal rates and go about in trains and public transport or in 3-wheelers. Has a feasibility report been done or will it a be another white elephant?

You are always talking about developing and expanding, however what we citizens see is only the expansion and development of one's size, corruption and robbing public wealth.

Sam Silva Friday, 07 July 2023 09:56 PM

Only expansion we see is their belly getting larger.

    Sokrates Friday, 07 July 2023 03:56 PM

Nonsense. No high end tourists will come to Sri Lanka. Because 1. too many crooked people work in the tourism industry. 2. There is still no good infrastructure in Sri Lanka. 3. All 5 star hotels are no more than 3 star hotels by international standards.

If Mattala Airport in the South can handle A330 then why not Palaly airport in the North to be expanded (runway) to handle the same.

    Nation Friday, 07 July 2023 04:33 PM

First develop the normal bus service!!

All of you are so against developing the North. Its about time we develop it after wasting 14 years since the war. Most people don't travel from Colombo to the North because travelling on the roads with idiotic drivers are risky and exhausting. Same goes for the Train. This would allow tourists to travel quickly to the north so they spend more time enjoying the North rather than spending more time travelling to the North. Even in Malaysia with the highways it takes only a couple hours to travel from one state to another, but people prefer using domestic flights as it is faster and convenient.

This minister is a hard-core abuser of power for 3 decades. Wonder why keeping him within the cabinet?

Tissa Fernando Saturday, 08 July 2023 06:49 AM

Mahinda Rajapaksha International Air Port? Look at how this guy used the public money to build an air port and skim some money out of it and also put his name on it. This should be renamed as Mattala International Airport.
