The government is planning to send a military contingent consisting of doctors and engineers trained in UN humanitarian operations for humanitarian operations in Turkey which has been affected by the recent earthquake, the Prime Minister's office said.

A special discussion on the provision of humanitarian aid for the affected Turkish people was held yesterday at the Temple Trees under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena on the instructions of the President.

During the meeting, it was discussed how to provide essential basic facilities and labor contribution to the Turkish people at this moment with the contribution of government institutions, non-government institutions and the private sector.

A committee headed by Prime Minister's Secretary Anura Dissanayake has been appointed to implement the program.

Also, the possibility of providing humanitarian aid for Syria through Lebanon was discussed during the meeting.

Ministers Ali Sabry and Nasir Ahmed secretaries of ministries, chairmen, and heads of private institutions participated in the meeting.

The death toll from the Turkey-Syria earthquakes has passed 21,500. At least 18,342 people have been killed in Turkey, according to the country’s officials, while at least 3,377 are known to have died in Syria. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

One would say Sri Lanka has enough on the plate with the economic woes. However, the situation there is terrible. Nature can be ferocious than man made disasters.

During the earthquake disaster in Japan, the then Sri Lanka government readied a team to visit japan to offer assistance. The Japanese government informed Sri Lanka that they have to find their own food and accommodation. Sri Lanka does not have such capabilities or the funds. These statements are just jokes.

For a recent military training visit to India our heros did not have money for the flights, food, accomodation etc all was paid by the Indian hosts. How are our doctors and rote learning engineers going to cope when they don’t speak Turkish. They will only be an impediment to the Turkish rescue efforts

Who is going to give them Return Air Tickets, food and accommodation during their stay there. Will the Turkish Govt provide these facilities. This is a big joke because people here do not have essential food, medicines and other commodities.

UN Humanitarian training in comparison to disaster management and operation are miles apart, especially when there are so many countries involved. Sri Lanka isn't geared to assist in these type of disasters, our politico's are dead brains, we're truly be a nuisance to an on going operations and Sri Lanka is in NO POSITION TO PROVIDE ANY HELP ! They can help local folks instead.
