The Sri Lankan Foreign Service is crippled without the adequate number of career diplomats triggered by non-recruitment for a long time, apparently to reserve vacancies for political appointments, Daily Mirror learns.

According to a top source, the country has only 166 diplomats out of the approved cadre of 268, which itself is not large enough. The source said that the lack of career diplomats had impacted the operation of around 60 overseas missions in Sri Lanka and 22 divisions of the foreign ministry.

“When we mentioned this to some foreign ambassadors, they were taken aback. Fresh efforts are expected to be made to recruit people to the Foreign Service. It is difficult to run the service in this manner,” the source said.

Daily Mirror learns that the Sri Lankan embassy in Jakarta is run without a single officer from the career service.

Sri Lankan Foreign Service has also been politicized for decades. Currently, non-career diplomats have been posted to key capitals such as Washington DC and Moscow. Most of the time, relatives of politicians are appointed to key posts in the Sri Lankan missions abroad. It is also learnt that some missions are over-staffed and others understaffed. This is the direct result of promoting distilled idiots such as politicians, Ex Army / Navy personals as Diplomats. If the foolish Sri Lankan Politicians want promote these idiots who cannot string two words in English - you will never be able to get back to the days when elite CCS did yeoman service to the country.

Oh ..my God . What happened to this one time an excellent public service with some top level diplomatic mission ..Our cream of intellectuals were selected to this post once but now all gone up and down .. MR and co damaged this public service as they did with all other service locally. His friends and relatives are appointed to some service and look the outcome of this . Why do we have SLOS examination to screen out the best brains of Sri Lankan graduates . All went down one by one by fraud and corruption introduced by MR and co...we won the moral of physical fighting against LTTE but utterly failed to win our moral fights against fraud and corruption. May God deal with all those destroyed this beautiful country..what can we say more ?

Do not worry. Imf even never recommended such things. They are happy with rogue politicians and family memebers appointed at these places.

Political appointees everywhere Wednesday, 19 July 2023 10:20 PM

All ambassadors and deputy are all political appointees. What is the point of honest people when the embassy top people are no good. The good to be in places missions will be over-staffed, while no one wants to go to terrible to be in places. There is nothing unusual about it, in politically crooked country. Fix parliament and presidency before trying to meddle everywhere else! President is currently a political appointee too, with SLPP putting him up and not the voters!
