The Samagi Jana Balawegaya today hinted at bringing in a resolution to dissolve Parliament and hold a snap general election and urged other parties to support this.

SJB official spokesman and Member of Parliament S.M. Marikkar told the media that all parties in the House including the SLPP and others should be ready to sign a resolution calling for the dissolution of Parliament and hold a general election.

“SLPP MP and former Minister Johnston Fernando had said the SLPP will emerge victorious in future elections. Therefore we challenge him and the SLPP to support a resolution to dissolve the House and face a general election,” Marikkar said.

“Parliament is messed up today and does not represent the will of people. Therefore, it is best that it is dissolved, and let the people decide who should be given power,” he added.

The MP did not rule out bringing a resolution to dissolve the House and call for a fresh general election.

“We don’t reveal our political strategies beforehand,” he said responding to a question raised by the media as to whether his party would bring in a resolution for the dissolution. (Yohan Perera)

General election is necessary but this is a waste of time.

Another futile attempt. Although they may give the impression that they are anti-government, no SLPP MP is likely to pull the rug from under their own feet. They will flock together when their interests are endangered.

Very Good move. RW has NO POWER and just dragging. He is GREEDY FOR POWER.

Speculation Wastes Time Monday, 31 July 2023 01:25 PM

How did you predict that the parliament does not represent the will of the people? Did you consult Gnana akka? The current parliament has democractically elected peoples representatives, however corrupt they may be. SO shut up and wait till the due date for the general elections. Presidential elections perhaps can be argued is needed because the 6.9m votes were wasted when GR resigned.

Section of SJB MPs want to go for parliamentary elections and help RW to form a govt and then go for the Presidential election with RW as their candidate

The President and the current parliament should sit and plan all four elections for next year 2024 and announce the dates now. Start with a presidential election, then a General Election, followed by a Provincial Council election and last the smallest Local Government Elections. Thereafter if new borders are needed for LGs etc like what Mahinda Deshpriya bragged about before dissapearing from the scene, such changes for the better should be worked backwards to fit in to the pre announced election dates.

Government has the majority in parliament, it's a vain attempt. SLPP parliamentarians are compelled to cling on till the term of parliament ends, since, if there is an election, today's economic difficulties has compelled the suffering people to reject the present set of parliamentarians. Masses are expecting a new generation to emerge.

A good proposal, indeed. Don't give up.

    Vernon Monday, 31 July 2023 02:38 PM

Most of the MP 's will not like this. They will be happy to stay for ever. Another election means they have to spent millions to grab votes . SriLankan is a country people vote for money and emotional feelings. SJB is making another in successfull move.

Why not SJB, JVP and other opp. boycott parliament or resign like JR did in 1975 from his seat Colombo East making the govt. calll a by-election according to then constitution. All anti govt. MPs of other parties incl. SLPP must follow compelling RW to desolve b'cos international bodies won't consider it as a democratic rule.

RW SHIVERS AT THE NEWS OF ANY ELECTIONS. THEREFORE, HE WILL SOMEHOW DODGE HOLDING OF ELECTIONS

Kumara Ilangasinghe Monday, 31 July 2023 04:14 PM

All the elections should be held on one day to save money and man hours. Moreover the entire political administration can be changed to suit the will of the people in one go.

    Gamini Monday, 31 July 2023 04:56 PM

SJB is only thinking about themselves and not the people

Tissa Fernando Monday, 31 July 2023 05:20 PM

Power hungry SJB. Trying to destabilize country since 2019.

    Kevin Monday, 31 July 2023 05:37 PM

No point in general elections. Sri Lankans keep electing the same corrupt politicians over and over again.

    Saman Monday, 31 July 2023 06:47 PM

The SJB did not have the proverbial to lead the country out of the economic abyss an year ago. Now after a lot of hard work has been done to steady the ship and on the cusp of the country coming out of the official bankruptcy status the SJB wants to topple the apple cart! Too little too late buddy.

SJB time wasters, activity in vain Monday, 31 July 2023 07:09 PM

Like all SJB action, this is more show with no prospect of success. They wanted LG election and made so many moves for it, utterly to fail. They want to bring no-confidence motions, but no one wants to support SJB silliness. This again is a SJB action in vain.

This is a pure diversion as a mode of incapacity to rule a country in dire states such as Sri Lanka. Political rubbish.

    Tony Monday, 31 July 2023 08:41 PM

Eradicate hora Ranil power We need peoples power not dictator or murders in a parliament People are frustrated need real president from people vote

    joshua Monday, 31 July 2023 09:31 PM

bring a resolution. That is good. But SLPP goons will not support as they are clinging to RW's trousers for oxygen.

NO MONEY PERERA Tuesday, 01 August 2023 09:14 AM

This is a good idea. Ranil may grab it and dissolve parliament, but what is the guarantee that another election will be held? Of course, the excuse of "NO MONEY PERERA" is always available to Ranil. If there is no money for local polls, from where do the money for General Election come?

    Kuttiarachchi Tuesday, 01 August 2023 01:52 PM

Marikkar merely bringing a Resolution to Dissolve Parliament does not mean Parliament is going to be dissolved ? A waste of his efforts .
