A resolution is to be brought in to expel MP Ali Sabry Raheem from Parliament following the charges of attempting to smuggle gold.

MPs who attended the party leaders' meeting told journalists that the issue over MP Raheem was discussed at the meeting and it was decided that action has to be taken against the MP whom they believe had brought disrepute to all MPs.

“Party leaders decided that action should be taken against MP Raheem and former Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa was of the opinion that the MP can be expelled. Therefore, we decided that a resolution should be brought in to request the Speaker to take action against MP Raheem,” an MP who attended the party leaders' meeting said.

“It was decided that action should be taken against MP Raheem and that he should be expelled,” a ruling party MP said.

There is a precedent in expelling an MP over charges of corruption as former MP Anura Daniel was expelled during the time of late President J.R. Jayewardene, the MPs said. (Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)

Yes, it is possible because he is not from the popular party. What about the convicted MPs still serving the Ministerial position.

What about convicted murderers, what about the by international arrest warrant wanted murderer, what about the drug barons, what about the crooks who ruined the country economically? What about the minister threatening a human rights lawyer? All these felons are in government and in parliament.

If Mr. Ali Sabry Raheem is expelled from the Parliament for bringing disrepute to all M.Ps, and applying the same rule to all M.Ps, not many M.P.s will be left in the Parliament.

Prevention is better than cure. Elections commission should be given the powers to reject nomination papers of candidates who have criminal backgrounds.

    Buddhist Friday, 26 May 2023 05:47 PM

Yes, Raheem has to be punished. But at the same time when we have a murderer or murderers; a convicted Kappam guy, a so-called Drug Lord, and proven bribe takers, another minister who has asked for bribes, and MPs who have stolen money and built vast personal wealth are in the Parliament, how can one focus on a smuggler to kick him out of the Parliament? What about the big boss in the Parliament who violates the constitution and the standing orders?

JR removed Anura Daniel. What is Ranil doing instead of the stroke of the pen dismissing this guy from parliament. Asl, take Customs to task for enforcing a small fife instead of at least 75% of the Value? Who influenced the Customs?

In the same way bring a resolution to expell kappam Ranatunga who was fined by the courts.

If the government wants to follow Singapore, then every single item that a passenger carries at the airport MUST be subjected to scrutiny including that of the President, PM or whoever, alongside the body search. Some MPs get elected solely for the purpose of drug or gold runs to/from Dubai.

    Anthony. R Saturday, 27 May 2023 04:01 PM

Does the Legislators deserve VIP status? Obviously No. All are partners in the crime, sadly the Judiciary is in a deep Slumber

Panamure Kamalapala Saturday, 27 May 2023 04:49 PM

We must bring a resolution to sack all 225 and the so called self-appointed president?
