The government intends to allocate money in the next year’s budget for the relocation of the President’s House, Temple Trees, the Prime Minister’s office and the Presidential Secretariat to Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte so that these buildings can be developed for tourism as Colombo Heritage Square, a Minister said yesterday.

Minister Urban Development and Housing Prasanna Ranatunga told Daily Mirror a plan is now being worked out for the relocation of them.

“The government intends to allocate money for the whole purpose in the budget. The Urban Development Authority (UDA) is carrying out work in this regard,” he said.

UDA Chairman Nimesh Herath told Daily Mirror that a master plan is now under development for the project to be implemented. He said the plan for the construction of the President’s House in Madiwela close to the parliamentary complex during the time of former President Chandrika Bandaranaike will be revived in this exercise.

He said the new President’s House will be constructed at the same location but in a scaled-down manner
“At that time, there had been a plan to construct the President’s House with 40 rooms. We will go ahead with a structure of four rooms,” he said.

He said the UDA is carrying out the feasibility study with the involvement of the security forces.
“We have to look into the security aspect in this exercise,” he said.(Kelum Bandara)

At present, almost 70% our economics have run down, and the people are suffering without proper food and medicines people are dying. Why not allocate more for food and medicines rather than this foolish idea.

Nooooooooooooooooooooo. There no better place like colombo 01. Plus it's an unnecessary expenditure. We are all in colombo 01 because of the president - WTC, Hnb, all the head offices, don't you like us. Also if you have too much money to waste, you can give us, I'm in a credit crunch, stuck in a really bad financial situation and in need for help.

    Zaza Saturday, 15 July 2023 09:10 AM

Before doing that, please give us our daily bread.

    Vernon Saturday, 15 July 2023 11:15 AM

This is an utter joke. Prasana you may have to leave the office with your UDA chairman early. Please do not start and spend money unnecessarily. Already Chandrika started this nonsense and spend lot of money for the foundation and earth work no use. Wasting public money is a criminal offence.

    Kappan Saturday, 15 July 2023 11:19 AM

Yes, Yes, allocate monies in the next budget for these very very important projects to be urgently implemented. DO NOT ALLOCATE ANY MONIES FOR ANY ELECTIONS EVEN IF THEY ARE CONSTITUITIONALLY LONG OVER DUE.

    Jayantha Saturday, 15 July 2023 02:17 PM

Seems to be scared and want to live for another decade. Both crooks are 74 plus and still want to live enjoying public money. Grandfathers are ruling the country and major reasons for SriLanka to go in backward direction. Lol

Who is the buyer of these premises, is it India or China. The commission that they are getting must be hard to turn down. Like the Shangeri La deal to Rajapaksa’s. Now it’s Ranil Rajapaksa’s turn to make a quick buck.
