The power generation at the Kelanitissa power plant has come to a halt since Wednesday evening, with the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) suspending fuel supply required for power generation.

“The CPC has for some unknown reason suspended fuel supply to the Kelanitissa plant, although we are informed that CPC has sufficient stocks of Naphthalene required for three days,” President of the Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers Union Nihal Weeraratne said.

“Power generation has been awarded to West Coast Power (Pvt.) Ltd. to meet the country’s power demand, costing the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) around Rs. 10 per unit,” he revealed.  As a result the CEB incurs a loss of Rs. 40 million per day," Weeraratne charged.

He questioned as to why two state entities, namely the CEB and the CPC which are under the Ministry of Power and Energy have awarded power generation to a private company. “It begs the question as to why the subject Minister is instrumental in causing such a great loss to the country,” he said.

Meanwhile, only 12 shipments of coal have reached the country and the unloading of the 12th shipment is facing uncertainty, Weeraratne said.

He charged that the Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera failed to secure payments for these shipments, casting doubt over the country’s power generation capabilities over the next few months. “We have a limited window of opportunity and the Minister seems to be ignorant on this. I have been criticized for my statements in the past. But the more delays we face in unloading these shipments, more blackouts are highly likely in July,” he opined. (Kalani Kumarasinghe)

Privatise the CEB. We can solve the power generation issues. Minister is Clueless.

Cheapest for more hours of the night and day choosen Thursday, 09 February 2023 10:25 PM

All private sectors making mass appeals for improvements to CEB, while never putting up where the many billions it'll take to improve will come from. CEB is desperate, and choosing any and all cheapest power creation means. Solar does not work in after evening nor on cloudy days, let alone rainy days. The coal, and other fuel plants are only ones that can run 24 hours regardless of season. Less rain means Hydro gets out of action. Now desperate times means any cheap source for power generations whoever is cheapest at the time for more hours of the night and day chosen.

Tarrifs have to be raised to avoid more and more problems Thursday, 09 February 2023 10:27 PM

Tariff must be raised to get money for 24 hours power generation. PUCSL and Sobitha Thera blocking and protesting will only further lead us down the road to ruin. How can 24 hour running factories keep going when fuel supplies are reduced. Country will fall in worse state until tariffs upped to at least cost of power generation.

It will be very interesting to reveal who the owner is of West Coast Power (Pvt.) If I remember well, the name of Basil was mentioned at that time. If this is true, then we know the person who single handedly bankrupted the nation. Let us wait and see.

CEB is overstaffed and also the highest paying employer. These were political decisions at various times. Good luck to the private sector to fix the underlining issue

Doesn't anyone understand that the reason for service suspension is due to unavailability of fuel ? How does the private sector operate the same power generators without the main ingredient ? Hope they didn't think a generator can operate with urine.

The entire power generation mechanism of this country, including the dastardly minister, reeks of outright corruption even at this time when the country is in an economic quagmire.

"The great question is, why two state entities, namely the CEB and the CPC which are under the Ministry of Power and Energy have awarded power generation to a private company. Why the subject Minister is instrumental in causing such a great loss to the country” - This is not something new, even the former President caused huge losses to this poor Island, by banning the total imports and stealing from the reserves.

Your silly decisions makes the entire country suffer. You all should be kicked out lock stock and barrel.

Who was/is running CEB? Friday, 10 February 2023 10:01 AM

Are we to believe that the present minister is ignorant of the current plight of CEB? Was this the plight of previous ministers as well? So, who was running the CEB all these days while payables have accumulated mountain high? Public need answers to all these questions.

We must have a President in the country who is very honest and who will not tolerate fraud and corruption. It is only such a President who will cause immediate investigations into these allegations and also that PUCSL is charging 50% less for Electricity supplied to certain Luxury Apartments.
