Police used water cannons to disperse a group of university students from the Jaffna University and a group of parents of the disappeared, who staged a protest at Arasadi Junction in Jaffna today.
They had attempted to march towards Nallur from the Jaffna University when the police dispersed them at the Arasadi Junction.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe had visited Jaffna today to participate in the National Thai Pongal Ceremony.

International community and IMF note how human rights of the minority is being trampled. This Govt thinks they can use the police and armed forces to mitigate any agitation.

They are not university students, they are useless and brainless students. He has come to celebrate their own festival. Instead of joining him and showing their confidence in him to gain whatever they aspire, they foolishly engage in protest as if he had gone their for political event.

I served as a police officer in the Jaffna Police station in the period 1987 and 1988. We were told not to leave our police station and remained inside while the Indian Army killed anything that moved in Jaffna and abducted hundreds of Tamils from temples ,schools , and even from homes . What happened to those Tamils is still a mystery. We received so many complaints at the Jaffna Police station from people about the kidnaps but we were unable to do anything as at one stage the Indian Army threatened to blowup the Jaffna Police station if we interfered with their “WORK”. Of all those who went missing in the North , I hope there are Tamils looking into specifically in the period the Indian Army controlled Jaffna.

People have their right to protest and it is clear from what had happened in Jaffna the Authorities had shown their weakness and do not want to hear anything from the common people! A sign of weak and helplessness. It is a sad situation

Boniface, whether university students or not is irrelevant to the cause, it was absolutely unnecessary to have a water cannon show. Ranil isn't the most welcomed man at anywhere today, he should have known these details beforehand and avoided his presence. People in North doesn't want him there, it is just simple as that.

They have a right to know what happened to their loved ones. First sort that out.
