Opposition parties expressed different ideas on devolving power to Provincial Councils in the aftermath of the All Party Conference which was held on Wednesday.

Main Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), TNA and United Republican Front led by Patali Champika Ranawaka called for the holding of Provincial Council elections while MP Venerable Athuraliye Rathana Thera came up with a totally different idea.

SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara said the President should hold the Provincial Council election even under the proportional representation system. "We are ready to support the government on an amendment to the Provincial Council Act so that the election can be held immediately," he told a media briefing.

MP Ranawaka said the government can hold the Provincial Council election even under a mixed system, if the delimitation issue is resolved within a month. "Also devolving power to Provincial Councils could be done according to the current situation. The need today is to have tamil speaking policemen and not devolving police powers to Provincial Councils. Even Wellawatta police needs tamil speaking policemen," he said.

Venerable Rathana Thera highlighted that the President has called for the all party conference to fulfill his political ambition. "President seemed to be worried on the next election. All he should do is to present a manifesto which comprises his idea on devolving power," he said. (Yohan Perera)

I have no idea what these parties are talking about. After so much heartache and grief since days of Tamil Leader SJV Chelvanayagam, Tamils lost numerous lives and their properties. No solution other than Federalism is acceptable to North East.

    Ram Friday, 28 July 2023 03:39 AM

Why talk about Opposition. Even President Ranil wanted PCs scrapped meaning 13A removed. What made him to change his stance is the visit to India

    Vignesh Friday, 28 July 2023 06:10 AM

Should be done long back.As long tamil government offers day day to issue.

    Malij Friday, 28 July 2023 06:12 AM

The last seven presidents avoided this subject fearing a backlash from the south. Hence, the politicians who say that this is a ploy to get nothern votes are playing dirty. Hats off to the prez trying to solve this.

    Cugan Friday, 28 July 2023 06:24 AM

Drag the country further down, the police in the.north and the East are useless, they are not helpful to public at all, all they do is protect the criminals and by standers to destroy Tamils lives ,the other force is to build vihara

    dana Friday, 28 July 2023 06:24 AM

Most important of the time is give opportunity to vote, some delayed more than four years, it’s doubtful opposition would support otherwise,

What the FANTA, you don't need to devolving power. Change the education system, make ( English , as mandatory subject for A/L while English, Sinhala, Tamil and Mandarin as mandatory subjects till O/L, scrap outdate subjects ). Change the recruitment process for gov jobs, all new recruits must be fluent in all 2 languages (English , Sinhala/Tamil) Give language training ( English, Tamil and Sinhala) , for all gov employees (make it part of their KPI ) and get them to do online. Make English as the official language of education. World has moved on, while Sri Lankans are still FANTAing around this language issue ..

Ven. Athuraliya Rathna Thero never to be trusted as he is a selfish fellow who will support MR when he was a President and now support RW for his own benefits and comforts.

    Dr. D.K.M. Jayawardene Friday, 28 July 2023 07:46 AM

You are correct Mr. Madumma Bandara stick on to the PC elections which the President is not in Favour as he knows pretty well if PC election is held, UNP and SLPP will face a bottom-line defeat.

Meera XYD Friday, 28 July 2023 07:48 AM

Knowing what the final conclusion JVP will be rejected the invitation of the President, same way SJB also should have done to slap the President and put him in to shame.

    D. Tharmalingam [Jaffna Kachcheri] Friday, 28 July 2023 07:51 AM

President is not at all worried about 13A, all what he expecting to capture the valuable Tamil votes from the North. Now he failed.

    Sulli Saman (A-2) Friday, 28 July 2023 07:53 AM

Don't worry we have another plan to trap President to hold the PC elections soon, then you guys (SJB) also can join with us.

    Uali Friday, 28 July 2023 08:02 AM

RW seems in rush 13A, but if he really wants to serve people he should call for elections, now in some cases, more than four years over due, opposition should make this opportunity to correct him to do so, without falling in to pothole

    D. Niluka Arunoda Perera Friday, 28 July 2023 08:10 AM

What country need now is a General Election. PCs not needed for the whole country. But devolving power only to the North is a must. This election process will also finalize the extent of power devolution and a proper constitution. This has to be done through a special ammended with the consent of the patliament. It will be a islandwide general election and a referendum only to the North.

    Mahila Friday, 28 July 2023 08:31 AM

Instead of ALL PARTY CONFERENCE, hold a non-binding referendum (4th Amendment), to assess the Need, Desire and Aspiration of the Sovereign People themselves, their Elected and Nominated Representatives and the 'Parties' they belong to!? The latter are irrelevant compared to 'the SOVEREIGN PEOPLE, with whom ULTIMATE sovereignty remains!!!! These “all Party conference” is to ensure ‘NO DECISION’ on the matter CARNIVAL. DANCE once again!!!???

    Tulseth Friday, 28 July 2023 09:17 AM

The opposition is being disingenuous in their position. The pot seems to be calling the kettle black. The president has the courage to take this on, and it may translate into support for him increasing as the person who resolves a long outstanding issue for the country. Should the initiative be sabotaged because of that?. No. If the issue is that the resolution gives political advantage to the person who champions it and that it is undertaken with that sinister motive, and it should be blocked as a result, then the nation issue will never be resolved. Sadly that has been the history over the past 40 years. Heaven help Sri Lanka from our selfish opposition (applies to both sides of politics at different times).

    Sambo Friday, 28 July 2023 09:24 AM

13A will never materialize as promised by our presidents. They are all time servers. So please think of something which will take place.

    Dollas Friday, 28 July 2023 09:28 AM

Believe me RW will never hold PC elections as he and his Potuwa rogues will lose their powers.

    Jayantha Friday, 28 July 2023 09:46 AM

Why going behind this outdated idea of 13a. Opposition should stop this from doing by this mandateless RW. What should be done is use technology and provide most of the government services. Setup ways to submit issues online and also make ways to pay fines online. Also apoint at least few police officers who can speak in tamil in sinhala dominant areas while several sinhala speaking once in tamil dominant areas. 13A should not be allowed and it will hamper modernization and usage of technology.

    Jude Friday, 28 July 2023 10:38 AM

Here's the thing, no Elections whatsoever for the next 5 years?!?? RANIL making all parties to fight among themselves on devolving power and other crap to follow the strategy, devide and conquer!!

Justin Felix Balasundera Friday, 28 July 2023 12:24 PM

Never attend to any meetings with Ranil. He is a dam liar, an actor, a racialist and a greedy fellow for power alone.

Meera XYD Friday, 28 July 2023 12:26 PM

Now get to gather with JVP, SLFP

Final outcome Friday, 28 July 2023 02:04 PM

You guys keep debating, Kariyawasam opposed it

    N V Jen Friday, 28 July 2023 02:55 PM

When Chandrika presented her devolution proposals Ranil scuttled it by burning the draft in parliament. Now the same Ranil portraying himself as a liberal democrat to outer world while flexing the iron fist internally, is trying to hoodwink everyone again, just to win the next presidential elections.

    Wiraj Friday, 28 July 2023 03:00 PM

Mahinda could have resolved the issue after the war as he promised. Alas, he was hell bent on plundering only.
