Uncertainty looms on the appointment of MP Mayantha Dissanayake as the new Chairman of the Public Finance Committee as the MP saying he has no issue in resigning from the post in the midst of Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) insisting on appointing MP Harsha de Silva to the post.

It was reported that Dissanayake was appointed as the Chairman while MP de Silva cried foul play by the government. “ I must have been a headache to the government as I did not allow any financial regulations to go through without investigating them closely,” de Silva said.

“ Government has exposed itself through this action as institutions such as IMF and World Bank will not get to know how the government works.” He added.

Daily mirror reliably learnt that Dissanayake has expressed that he has no issue in resigning paving the way for de Silva but it all depends on the Speaker. “ It is up to the Speaker to decide on the matter,” sources who are close to Dissanayake said.

Earlier it was reported that Dissanayake had refused the request made by both Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa and the Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella to resign from the post. (Yohan Perera)

When Harasha was doing a good job why change it Mayantha needs to support him in this instance. People want to know the truth and the rogues exposed ad action taken against them

For this position it is vital to appoint an eligible matured person who can analyze the situation economically, financially taking the matters into consideration locally and globally and give his recommendations while guiding the committee. Mayantha is not matured and sound in this subject matter.

    Abey Friday, 24 February 2023 10:05 AM

Mayantha has no ethics. Just a parasite hungry for position and power.

    Nilupul Friday, 24 February 2023 09:04 AM

Harsha is obviously a far the better option than Mayantha while Sunil Handunneththi is still the best option - either way, its the system that is 100% corrupt. So, these Parliamentary committees are simply `hog washes` that don't really mean anything to the country`s betterment or its people.

How can a person who studied printing and worked in a printing firm for a short time head a Finance committee. Mayantha please give way to Dr Harsha who is a economist and banker) as he is more suited for the position

    L Jaya Friday, 24 February 2023 09:50 AM

You, Mayantha should resign, no one will force you to continue in the chairmanship post with objection from your own SJB

    Following his father

Dee Kayman Friday, 24 February 2023 09:54 AM

What's up with Mayantha, has he got a UNP leaning from his father's roots? Ranil at play again.

Harsha is a drama queen, he was with the bond scam government. Harsha is a puppet of the media terrorist. Harsha should first get Jalani Premadasa to give back the JAAL spa property she is illegally occupying without paying rent.

Mark Anandappa Friday, 24 February 2023 10:40 AM

This is a move by RW to create division in the SJB . Hopefully the SJB will realise this tactic

Asoka Goonawardena Friday, 24 February 2023 10:53 AM

Please do so Harsh is more capable to handle this post as seen by the public before. He is competent and will deliver the goods. Mayantha must remember that he is only an appointed MP

Tissa Fernando Friday, 24 February 2023 12:10 PM

Harsha is Cable in pinpointing minor issues and wasting everyone's time.

Kandiah Nakesuparan Friday, 24 February 2023 11:12 AM

The Government has succeeded in creating a rift among meKmbers of SJB it appears.

    Mohamed Hassan Al-Ihsan Friday, 24 February 2023 12:31 PM

I see it in a different angle. it should haven the tricky work of the government to create unwanted internal dispute to make division within the SJB. I hope who is behind the dirty work of this. It seems to be political game and put the check. Both should come to common consensus in order to defeat this plot.

    Mizaru Friday, 24 February 2023 12:39 PM

This man will eventually join the UNP or more precisely Ranil. The SJB should ignore the fellow.

    Bandu Friday, 24 February 2023 01:11 PM

Why speakers involvement. Mayantha can resign by himself. Liar who is amenable to Pohottuwa where his elder brother is leading figure.

    Nimal Friday, 24 February 2023 01:12 PM

I thought Mayanatha and the speaker are two different individuals.

    Lilantha Friday, 24 February 2023 01:34 PM

No MP is not indispensable. So what is big deal with Harsha ?

    Cherath Saturday, 25 February 2023 08:15 AM

This may be the first of many steps by Mayantha to join with his brother's camp, the UNP. Apparently, he has refused to resign when asked by SJB hierarchy, meaning he is working on the agenda of someone else.

Dr De Silva gave the proactive leadership to the committee and be preemptive to prevent many malpractices and other wrong doings. It is the opposition prerogative to name a credible person with caliber who can give the leadership to this public finance committee as they did in this case and the committee has rights to accept or reject that name based on competency experience and public trust in that person. The criteria seems to be party politics and affiliation to government nothing else as it happened in this case .The negation of sprit of selecting suitable person is the primary cause of down fall of this land as it has proved over and over again like this financial crisis
