In the wake of the elephant Muthu Raja who was badly abused while being kept at a Buddhist temple, several Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) are attempting to publicize the notion that elephants should be removed from the perahera culture, Asgiriya Chapter Venerable Narampanawe Ananda Thera said.

He told the media that Muthu Raja was a well-tamed elephant.

This is a planned propaganda that NGOs always resort to during every perahera season, Thera said.

"Every nation in any country has its own culture. In the Sinhala Buddhist culture, we used to use elephants. In England, horses are used for their royal ceremonies as part of their own culture," he said.

According to the reports issued by the Wildlife Department, a large number of elephants were killed during the human-elephant conflict in 2022. But none of the tamed elephants have died yet due to abuse.

While condemning the statement made by Venerable Pahiyangala Ananda Sagara Thera, the Asgiriya Chapter said that there is no vocational training or education that can be given for the care of elephants, and that always comes from practice.

Therefore, people should stand against those NGOs to protect our own perahera culture, the Thera added. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

Quite agree with you Sirs, NGOs are trying to destroy our culture.Do they raise their voices when the King goes on fox hunting or angling or bird shooting for fun? When turkeys are slaughtered in abundance for X's day?

Using horses for marching is quite different to using elephants for hard labour and abusing and torturing the animal. This so called SL culture is full of corruption, child abuse, murders and robberies. Is that a good culture? Hiding behind this culture is why SL is where it is. Blind faiths and religions have done more damages.

There are many who work for NGOs in Sri Lanka to lick the dollars. They work with utmost obedience when the bosses are white.

When the money is good or better people are happy to work Wednesday, 05 July 2023 01:04 PM

People work for money. MPs work for the entitlements. The colour of the boss doesn't matter to for obedient attitude of Sri Lankans when the pay is good. And when the pay is good people of any land are more than willing to show happy obedience.

Two wrongs does not make one right. The culture will not get destroyed, only develop like we all do hopefully. Are you all not hiding of shame because of this Muthu Raja story? Why are Buddhist monks not carry the relics themselves like the Catholics do? I am sure Lord Buddha would appreciate this.

Commenting Sri Lankan style: always pointing fingers at others to cover up your own mess. Horses are domestic animals and not chained in shackles. No horse in the UK is transported abroad because of maltreatment. The whole world knows this story. Are you all not completely ashamed of yourself?

We always hide behind our culture and that is the major excuse to defend our lapses and corrupt system.

In principle, this is not about questioning culture, because it is an expression of a country's identity and should be preserved and further developed !!! But the "abuse" of this elephant in a Buddhist country, and then in a monastery district, is a disgrace to Sri Lanka! And this terrible, despicable happening under the eyes of Buddhist monks !!! The animal abuse is part of the brutalization of many people that has taken place in the country, especially in the last decade! In this example, and there are many other deformations in other areas of human behavior, showing how far the country, led by the example of morally bad politicians, has strayed from the teachings of the Buddha !!!
