A 14-year-old girl who had been raped by a 55-year-old man is alleged to have eloped with the suspect while the case against him was pending.
The suspect was a resident of Elabodagama in Pannala and the father of three daughters.
Police said on a date in 2022, the suspect who enjoyed a drink of liquor with her father in her house had raped the girl first after her father fell fast asleep and continually raped her at times. He had been arrested and produced in court and remanded and later released on bail while the case was pending.
On a court order the victim had been entrusted to the care of her mother.
However she had complained to Pannala police that her daughter had eloped with the suspect.
OIC Women and Children’s Bureau IP Savithri Sirimanna and WPC 8812 Shyamali are conducting investigations on the instructions of OIC Pannala police Upul Ariyaratne to arrest the suspect. (Dinesh Upendra)

If the girl was raped by this man then how come she had eloped with the rapist. It does not make any sense.

These crimes should not be tolerated and maximum punishment should be meted out to the perpetrator of this crime. The life of the young girl has been destroyed.

SL got very weak legal system!! The victims have very limited rights whereas the culprits got all the rights and well protected!!! Very hard place to get convictions!!

The case will drag for another few years and by the time she turns 18, she can get married to him as well.
