The Kekirawa police has arrested a female attorney-at-law who had allegedly torn and destroyed two copies of documents that were included in a file in the archives in relation to a land case pending before the Kekirawa District Magistrate's Court.

Police said the Attorney representing the proceedings of the Kekirawa District Magistrate's Court had reportedly torn two documents from a file related to a land case in the court registry and had chewed and destroyed them inside the court.

She was arrested after court officials who were on duty in the archives notified the court registrar.

The police officers who were on duty in court at that time examined the suspected lawyer and found some pieces of the documents that she had chewed and destroyed.

Police said the lawyer will be produced before the Kekirawa Magistrate's Court tomorrow (28). (Kushan Jayawardena)

This is not something new that happens in land issues. The relevant documents destroyed and claims they were not received and you sent them again and again and finally you give up. Then the crooks take over your land.

She must be jailed for this offence. I hope the party relying on the document has made photocopies before handing the original to court.

Why cannot Sri Lanka still go to the digital copy of these case files?

    Cherath Friday, 28 July 2023 02:43 PM

Third shows why digitalisation is a must. A rival party can bribe a peon and get him to pull out and destroy sheets of land registry documents, thus depriving another's rightful ownership. Travesty of justice that actually happened.

Reminds me of Sinhala saying "Wetath, niyarath goyam kaanam, kaata pawasami ae ammaruwa". When those who are supposed to uphold the law, abuse the law, who will to uphold the law.

Hunger is affecting even the relatively well-paid legal profession. Things are getting worse in Sri Lanka economy despite our President's rose-tinted outlook.
