***GMOA to strike today over ill-tempered consultant

***LRH Director considers strike to be inhuman

The 24-hour token strike to be launched by the Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) starting from 8 a.m. today (19) at the OutPatient Department (OPD) of the Lady Ridgeway Hospital (LRH) will go down in history as the first strike at the hospital.

According to GMOA Media Spokesman Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe, the token strike would be launched in protest over Health Ministry's failure to take necessary action against an ill-tempered consultant at the hospital.

Dr. Wijesinghe told the Daily Mirror that the LRH Director and the Director General of Health Services had failed to resolve the issue, resulting in creating an uncomfortable environment for other doctors to work with the particular consultant.

"Thus, we urge the authorities to look into the issue without further delay, in order to maintain a smooth operation at the hospital," he added.

He further noted that the strike would be the first trade union action to be launched at the LRH.

Meanwhile, speaking to Daily Mirror, LRH Director Dr G. Wijesuriya said, "The strike action could be considered to be inhuman as it put the lives of children at stake.

The probe against the particular consultant is underway. However, the three doctors who worked along with the consultant have not been reporting to duty since June 21,” Dr Wijesuriya added.

Responding to this, the GMOA Media Spokesman said the three doctors had been assigned to the office of Director General of Health Services under a Ministry’s directive.

GMOA is a politically motivated Inhuman association.

Either Health Minister should step down or Ranil has to step down to resolve the ongoing Health crisis in SriLanka.

Alert - another 40 Doctor's will leave the island soon. Afterwords, the state of Sri Lanka's health is in question, probably 50-60% innocent patients will die.

Ranil Wickramasinghe take it from me. Plans been drawn to kill all Cabinet ministers you appointed in vain - they are robbing our money doing nothing. Finally the guns will be pointed at you, before that go for an election..

GMOA strike is reasonable, now it is the baby of Ranil and his Potuwa robbers who is destroying our country.

    Dr. R.N.P. Jayasena Wednesday, 19 July 2023 09:38 AM

Welcome move.... no other alternative, patients will have to sacrifice today, but it is for their own good.

    R.K. Fernando (attorney-at-law) Wednesday, 19 July 2023 09:40 AM

Teach a bitter lesson to Ranil and Kehilya today and keep a full stop for the Health issues. Rambukwella should be removed, or he should resign.

    R.P. Ganesh (Health Inspector - Jaffna) Wednesday, 19 July 2023 10:39 AM

Sorry for the patients because of this GMOA's sudden strike. However, the Govt. must act fast and solve all the Health Issues without any further delay.

Dr. (Mrs) Hema Perera Wednesday, 19 July 2023 10:41 AM

Without proper medicines how could doctors take responsibility for the sick patients? Rambukwella had got down all inferior cheap drugs from India and filled his pocket with Commission. Some drugs seems to be home production without even proper labels.

Marcian Christoper Wednesday, 19 July 2023 11:30 AM

This is due to the relevant authorities not giving any heed to the appeals of the effected people and not taking any action to bring about a speedy solution to the problem.

There's a first time for everything! How great it would be if patients too had alternatives when doctors get more than an hour late for consultation without even an apology, and the exorbitant fees, like 5000, they charge for mere consultation etc etc..

    Uthum Wednesday, 19 July 2023 12:59 PM

The issue is about the conduct of a certain consultant. This is being investigated. The process needs tpo be completed. We all know the sad story of Dr. Shafi Shihabdeen of the Kurunegala hospital. He was humiliated before the conduct of a proper investigation. The GMOA is a politicised association. We cant take their views on matters. We need to learn from past mistakes.
