The All Island Canteen Owners' Association (AICOA) has placed a demand that the responsible authorities must intervene immediately to stop the flour mafia and lower the wheat flour price to the extent that the people could bear it.
AICOA Chief Asela Sampath told the media that the retail price of a kilo of wheat flour has increased in the local market to a maximum of Rs. 240.
"The price of a kilogram of wheat flour was Rs. 193." "Wheat flour had become the staple meal among the country's poor and low-income families, as well as among all others," he said.
Therefore, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) and Trade Ministry should intervene in this issue, he said.
He also thanked the Trade Minister for intervening in the matter to lower wheat flour prices earlier.
But with this sudden increase in price, it is suspicious who gets the commission, and this is a burning issue for innocent masses.
The Canteen Owners' Association further said that they request the main wheat flour importers to stop the mafia. If not, we have to intervene in the issue and reveal all the details, such as the import and unload costs and government concessions to the people.
Even though the price of wheat flour has increased, the price of canteen products haven't. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
