Tourism Minister Harin Fernando and former cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya, who are currently in Australia for a tourism promotion event, met Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunatilleke in Sydney.

In a Facebook post, Gunatilleke expressed his gratitude to the Minister and Sanath for their visit.

The 32-year-old cricketer is accused of sexually assaulting a woman while on tour in Sydney for the T20 World Cup.

He is facing one count of sexual intercourse without consent, after the public prosecutor withdrew three other charges earlier this year. Gunathilaka has entered a not guilty plea to the remaining charge and will stand trial.

Danushka Gunathilaka was arrested by the Sydney Police at the hotel where the Sri Lankan cricket team was staying on November 06, 2022, in connection with a complaint filed by a 29-year-old woman, a resident of Rose Bay, East of Sydney.

Gunathilaka was released on November 17 last year on a cash bail of 200,000 Australian dollars.

I know that a person is presumed innocent until he is proved guilty. But, why visit this scoundrel?

Wasting the public money going and meeting a 3rd class cricketer who spoiled the image of Mother Lanka is a crime.

This appears to be an act of defying the social order , ethics , moral duty etc. and merely aiming to just promote tourism . The moderate Sri Lankans or foreigners view in that point and finally the country as a whole will loose instead of gaining anything

Social order, ethics, moral duty? These guys do not know the meaning. We all know their track records

Promoting Tourism in Australia and highlighting a meeting with a felon facing a change of sexual misconduct also in Australia doesn’t send an assuring message about the travel safety in Sri Lanka to would be tourists. This is pure adolescent conduct on part of the Minister who tends to fly off the handle often when he is overseas. Recently he discredited Maldives Tourism openly, while on a similar tour in Europe. Are there no professionals to guide him?

Sri Lankan Tourism Minister association with an accused rapist is greater tourism promotion? Australian people will see it negatively, special women.

Suni Perera Friday, 14 July 2023 04:31 AM

The sordid details of Danushka's conduct while on tour was splashed globally whether accurate or not and has appalled many. Being the brilliant cricketer he is it's a shame he has got himself into this mess where hopefully he would have learned his lesson as a bit of discipline and decorum with love for his mother land could probably have prevented this. The SLC authorities too are partly to blame for not having laid down stricter ground rules for cricketers on overseas or any tour for that matter. It must be the end of a promising career sadly.

Juicy Situation this is. Seems like they are looking for some

Nilmini Welivita Saturday, 15 July 2023 10:12 AM

An imbecile government minister hooks up with a corrupt ex-cricketer and visits an alleged rapist spending taxpayer's money....business as usual in SL politics.
