Saying that they had immediately intervened in the incident of Journalist Tharindu Uduwaragedara being beaten and arrested by police, the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) yesterday said they will summon everyone linked to the case for inquiry.

The HRCSL said that shortly after Uduwaragedara was arrested and brought to the Borella Police Station, their Rapid Response Team visited the station and inquired about his condition.

Issuing a communiqué they said the Rapid Response Team of the HRCSL met with the Officer-in-Charge of the Borella Police and recommended that Uduwaragedara, who was said to have been beaten by the policemen inside a jeep, be referred to a Judicial Medical Officer (JMO).

“HRCSL will call for reports from relevant parties alleged to have been connected to the incident and summon all the concerned individuals as well for an inquiry,” the communiqué said.

Meanwhile, Uduwaragedara who is being treated at the Colombo National Hospital told the Daily Mirror last evening that he was expecting more test results to come by today to determine his condition.

“The report of my right eye test is yet to arrive and based on its results the doctors will decide to discharge me today,” he said.

Uduwaragedara was dragged out of a trishaw by a group of police riot controlling unit sleuths and bundled him into a police jeep before manhandling and beating him couple of strikes amidst his attempts to identify him as a journalist, reporting the joint trade union protest against the IMF deal in Borella on Friday afternoon. So this proves again that imf has funded a corrupted and lawless regime once again. Imf should be kicked out of SL before they make further havoc here. Also future government should take legal action against these imf rogue organization

Is it another public distraction tactic? Or the IGP competition?

Calling for reports means slow walking the investigation. This will be forgotten in a couple of days.

No one trusts the Human Rights Commission either because till this day no one has ever heard or seen the outcome of all such inquiries and investigations. The HRCSL is an utter bluff and an organization of no use to the human community. It is a well known fact all around the world.

Another useless organization that is unable to achieve anything worthwhile.

What action has the United Nations Human Rights Organization already taken in seeing this crude illegal action taken by the SL law enforcement authorities ? Why are they silent and not giving it world wide publicity like in other similar incidents happening elsewhere in the world? Our local Human Rights Commission is a name board only. So far we have yet to see the results of How Many Human Rights violations have they prosecuted..

Any representative of the media should be properly attired without giving onlookers the impression that one is part of those who are voicing their protests. Discipline should be instilled in these media professionals that their identity card is clearly depicted on their person so that no one can impersonate the media professionals covering an assignment. The higher authorities of these media organisations should ensure that media personnel should never act in a high minded attitude but be professional in discharging their duties with respect and honour.

HRCSL direction to produce the victim before JMO ASAP was done 12 hours later. Clearly the OIC of Borella Police is answerable for failure to carry out the HRCSL direction. Will the HRCSL take the OIC to task or just let it pass by?

Sri Lankan Police HAS NOT LEARNED from the 30 years of CiViL war in this Island.....The wartime Crimes and the Haig Tribune , HR watch dogs have been investigating this country on several occasions, BUT still the POLICE are VIOLATING CIVIL RIGHTS OF ITS OWN CITIZENS !!!
