The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) urged the health authorities to immediately conduct an impartial investigation into the death of a three-year-old boy, who died following a kidney operation at the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital (LRH).

GMOA Media Spokesman Dr Chamil Wijesinghe told Daily Mirror, “It's unfair for both parties namely victims and medical officers to draw early conclusions on the incident without a comprehensive analysis.”

“Hence, it's essential to promptly launch a probe into the incident so as to ascertain the actual cause of death,” Dr Wijesinghe stressed.

Meanwhile, the parents of the deceased child have accused the doctors of negligence, who identified that the child had developed acute kidney disease and thus advised the removal of the left kidney.

Nevertheless, the child's parents claim that the doctors later informed them that the healthy right kidney was also removed during the procedure.

Moreover, it is reported that the child, without any functioning kidneys, required haemodialysis until a suitable kidney could be transplanted. Tragically, the child passed away after contracting a harmful germ.

The deceased, a resident of Kotahena area was receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of LRH and died on Friday (28).

Daily Mirror's continuous attempts to contact a responsible official from the Health Ministry and LRH Director failed.

Can they put the blame on drugs or the health minister in some way? That might be a good option.

It is tragetic and pathetic end of this child. This incident came to lime light, since it happened in Colombo. How many thousand deaths similar to this taking place in hospital all over the country. For instance my father wa admitted to Ratnapura hospital with a history of Ashma, he passed away after the admistration of morphine. This happened in 1966. He left behind 10 children, family was shattered.

It is very clear why the officials of the health department are playing a game of hide and seek.

All fingers will point at our esteemed health minister.one day we should sit him down and ask him weather his commission was worth all the deaths.

Look we have to put things in perspective. Nobody lives for ever, if they did then there won't be any need for funeral parlours.

I don't understand what the fuss is about. They would have died anyway , even without the substandard medicine.

If it is not Doctor's fault, then why did the doctor leave the country immediately.

In 97-99 period one surgeon in Badulla Hospital made many blunders like this once he amputated wrong leg of a diabetic patient then the other one

My opinion is befor the surgery, surgeon should check full picture of the kidneys. You cant say accidentlt removed the relativly good kidney. Child died from different circumstance, like an infection during home dialisis, but reason for that is he lost his kidneys. Surgeon should responsible for that. He cant hide and practice medicine in a another country and earn fortune.

It's not about the medicine. Can't people understand the article. Some stupid doctors removed both kidneys of this child and after realising their mistake covered up by telling them dialysis will make up for loss of the kidneys. This should be considered gross negligence resulting in death and they should be tried for manslaughter.

GMOs always come up and say let's do an impartial investigation, and after that, nothing happens, and they sweep things under the carpet. They officially request it to show the public that they are proactive. GMO is a club where they scratch each other's backs and protect themselves. Medical mishaps are happening nationwide, and nobody has been brought to justice. The medical profession has been glorified and invincible only in Sri Lanka, where there is no accountability towards patients. Once they become doctors, they are forever untouchable until they die. Everybody wants to be a doctor because they know they are fully secure for the rest of their lives, and doctors expect patients to look up to them and honour them no matter what they do to their patients. It is pathetic. That is why Sri Lanka is the third world, with no law and order in every sector, especially in the medical sector.
