The deadline to former President Maithripala Sirisena and other accused individuals to pay compensation for failing to avert the Easter Sunday bomb attacks will come to an end on Wednesday (July 12).

In a verdict on January 12, the Supreme Court ordered former President Sirisena to pay a sum of Rs. 100 million while former IGP Pujith Jayasundara and former SIS director Nilantha Jayawardhane were ordered to pay Rs. 75 million each as compensation, former Defence Secretary  Hemasiri Fernando was ordered to pay Rs. 50 million and former National Intelligence chief Sisira Mendis was ordered to pay Rs.10 million within four months from January 12.

The Court held that these respondents had violated the fundamental rights of petitions filed over the Easter Sunday attacks.

The Easter bombings, the worst attacks in Sri Lanka since the civil war ended in 2009, took place on Easter Sunday in 2019, targeting three churches and three luxury hotels across Sri Lanka, killing 270 people and injuring over 500. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

  • Four days later what can the courts do, powerless even to make elections happen Saturday, 08 July 2023 10:37 PM

Courts cannot even keep the constitutionally required elections happen. The supreme court makes ineffective and pointless directions for election, which are easily worked around. Similarly, all these demands for compensation will be worked around easily. Nothing will help, and the injustice will continue four days from now.

The SC gave six months time to pay up the fine, There should not be any instalments, or, postponements!

Six months was too much already, courts were harsh to Ranjan Monday, 10 July 2023 09:15 PM

What do you think will happen in a few days when none of those who have to pay up pay up. None will sell their personal property, but totally rely on donations. It would be cheaper for them to spend a few weeks in easy no trouble jail, and come out than pay a cent because the courts demand it. Most likely they will just ask for another date a year from now, and repeat again and again until they all die, and their personal assets all pass on to their descendants in full. In comparison to the mass murder, and the those negligent, and how nothing will happen, Ranjan was harshly punished by the courts.

Funny situation here, JR Jayawardene, Gamini Dissanayake and a host of our patriotic leaders planned and engineered our multiple pogroms. No one has been held to account for this. Maybe the current situation in our country where we are subservient to external forces is divine retribution for what was done supposedly to benefit us

No issues, Mr. Maithripala Sirisena will pay 100 million and close the chapter. He has enough money to spend for the forthcoming presidential election.

I think he has made enough money during his term in the office. Do you remember there was an incident where one of his Secretaries was involved in collecting an huge brieb at one of the big hotel parking lot ? That itself was quite sufficient to cover up towards the Easter Sunday negligence.

Piyasiri Daranagama Tuesday, 11 July 2023 07:49 AM

It is pity that the Court has not ruled the consequences in case of non-complience / default. High time for the original complainant / s, refer the default to the courts again. The imposement of an adequate jail term will be a historical judgement to other similar culprits as well as to restore the erroded honor of the Judiciary.
