The government has decided to impose an excise tax of Rs. 10 per liter when tapping toddy to prevent illegal toddy production, Finance State Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said today.

He said a total of 150,000 liters of toddy are being produced daily, of which 50,000 liters are produced legally.

He said a proposal in this regard was handed over to the President yesterday. This proposal was made with the aim of increasing government revenue.

Due to the illegal production, the government and the producers lose profits. Therefore, the government had decided to impose an excise duty on toddy.

Until today, no such tax was imposed on toddy tapping and bottling. With this imposition of tax, no more taxes will be heaped on the people, the State Minister said. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

"With this imposition of tax, no more taxes will be heaped on the people, the State Minister said." Won't the producers pass the cost on to consumers, who happen to be the tax payers? (Always burden the consumer for politicians' mistakes and corruption?)

You will have to put a excise officer under each palm.

So many taxes now that we should have a minister of tax to look into more tax opportunities.

Toddy is a national heritage also it has lots of health benefits. I'm totally against illicit drugs and weed, but this toddy deserves more attention, we should promote this trade. It will be a good export too.

So do I have to pay excise duty on every litre of toddy tapped from the trees in my backyard for my consumption?

The tax is not for the purpose of stopping illegal production but to earn money for the treasury.
