The proposed power tariff revisions will provide a 23 percent reduction to consumers who uses less than 30 units, Minister of Power and Energy  Kanchana Wikesekera told Parliament.

Minister Wijesekera who moved the motion to remove Janaka Ratnayake from the post of chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL)  said the fixed tariff will be reduced to Rs. 250 from Rs. 400.

He said the electricity tariff of those who use between 31 and 60 units will be reduced by 9 percent and those who use between 0 and 60 units will be reduced by 7 percent.

“This is not a motion to abolish an independent commission but only to remove a non-independent person. This person has intimidated other members of the PUCSL. He has also engaged in purchasing power from Ceylon Electricity Board and had resold it to others. In addition, the PUCSL has not been convened since January this year,” the Minister said.

Coming up with another allegation against Mr. Rarnayake, the Minister said the delay on the part of the PUCSL Chairman to approve the power tariff revision which was proposed from January this year has caused the CEB a loss of Rs. 32 billion.

“We itend to file a court case to recover this amount,” he said.

“We have also heard that Mr. Ratnayake has announced his candidature at the next Presidential election. However, a mentally disabled person cannot contest a presidential poll according to the Constitution,” the Minister also said. (Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)

23% is more closer to the 27% mentioned by Janaka than the 3% stated by CEB. Can people be so dumb?

Well the PUCSL Chair has been upto games and positioning himself to take credit for anything positive. An instance is when he called for a price revision not too long ago knowing full well that half yearly price revisions have been instituted and that a tariff revision from 1 July was always going to happen anyway.

This man Kanchana is using Parliamentary privilege to attack Janaka on a personal basis. Kanchana at the last moment has also arbitrarily reduced some Tariffs just to spite Janaka treating the Electricity Board as his private concern ?

Then we have a doubt whether Kanchana can contest for presidency.

Once again absolute nonsense from an incompetent minister who does not know what he is talking about. Increase the fares threefold and then reduce them by 25% to hoodwink the people. No longer will the people of this nation fall prey to such tactics.

Environmentalists caused power prices to go up Wednesday, 24 May 2023 05:03 PM

If the coal power station was allowed during the terrible Presidency of Mithripala there would have been ample cheaper power. However, the solar and home rooftop mafia availed him to cancel that project. Their hidden agenda being so could sell their day time generated electricity at higher prices. Now we are deficient in generating for night time power still have sometimes have to rely on the most expensive generators during evening peak hours.

They should give some relief to those who use 61 to 90 units as well.
