Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are considering launching a cruise service between Colombo and Dhaka, Bangladesh, the Tourism Ministry said.

This was revealed during  a meeting between Bangladesh's High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Taregmd Ariful Islam and Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga at the Ministry of Tourism.

Accordingly, it was decided to launch a cruise service between the two countries in the future.

Minister Ranatunga said that more attention should be paid to uplift the tourism industry in the South Asian region through regional conferences such as BIMSTEC and SAARC.

He also said that a joint tourism action plan should be implemented in these countries through a conference of tourism ministers of South Asian countries.

The Bangladesh High Commissioner said that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on tourism is expected to be signed between the two countries.

During a visit to Bangladesh by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa earlier, it was decided to sign the MoU between the two countries.

The Bangladesh High Commissioner said that the MoU has been drafted and is expected to be signed soon.

The High Commissioner pointed out that the assistance of those involved in the tourism industry in Sri Lanka is essential for the revival of the tourism industry in Bangladesh and requested the Minister to assist in that endeavor.

Minister Ranatunga said that Sri Lanka is ready to come forward at any time.

It was revealed that SriLankan Airlines currently operates direct flights between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

The High Commissioner said that a private airline from Bangladesh is all set to launch direct flights between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

Good Idea Our Sri Lankan Ambassador too is working hard on this Topic in Promoting Sri Lanka and to work together with Bangladesh. Also Sri Lankan Airlines is the only direct flight to Srilanka from Bangladesh so we should promote more srilankan flights rather than permitting private Airlines to have direct flights, specially at this morement.

When exactly Minister? What happened to the Sri Lanka India Ferry Service? Any idea of operating cruise service to the Maldives, Seychelles, Mauritius, Madagascar, plenty of tourism related opportunities for our country but due to unprofessionalism and mere talk and nothing happens at the end.

I never knew that SL had this much importance and relationship with Bangladesh to the extent a private airline will operate direct flights between them and us.

Our minority citizens can cruise to Bangladesh and ask for refugee status there.

Who on earth would want to go to Bangladesh .A cruise to the Maldives and India is sensible .But a cruise to Bangladesh is as useful as having an airport in hambantota ...that is ,useless and unwanted .

To provide finally a passenger ship service to all people in Sri Lanka is most important and should be considered as a right by the authorities and at least in the early stage of reinatauration subsidized by the government. It seems that this island with a population of more than 20 Million souls appears to be the only inhabited island without ships to reach and leave it since close to 50 years. The "justified" reasons or excuses for this will never outweight the benefits for all people. Millions will never like to be squeezed into airplanes without much luggage allowance when coming back, especially the elderly and families. To travel by boat is fun, very social and inexpensive. People can take a lot of baggage on board and do also shopping abroad. This will of course disturb some kind of whole saler's business. But the welfare of the population should be prime and let millions of Sri Lankans finally experience the life of islanders without restricted travel opportunities.
