The Chinese government has come forward to fulfil 80% coverage of vaccines in Sri Lanka making the vaccination programme a great success and thereby strengthen the country, Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said.
She expressed these views at a special discussion held with the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong at the Chinese Embassy this morning.
"The Chinese Government has extended its support to the Government of Sri Lanka in strengthening the programme to save the lives of people infected with Covid-19 and to control the virus by providing essential medical equipment to Intermediate Treatment Centres and Hospitals," the Minister said.
Minister Wanniarachchi also thanked the Chinese Government for their support to control Covid virus in Sri Lanka from the outset, further strengthening the long standing international relations between the two countries.
In response, the Chinese Ambassador said the Chinese Government is giving priority to providing all assistance to control the Covid-19 epidemic in Sri Lanka. Accordingly, steps will be taken to provide grants and necessary assistance to Sri Lanka in the future, he said. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

It is not the vaccination program that matters but preventing the death toll and the government has failed miserably in controlling escalation of the virus but it boasts about vaccination to come on top of the world as the highest number of people vaccinated to score points from them.

Very frankly, the less said by this minister, the less embarrassment for the government. Sri Lanka's vaccination programme cannot be called out as a great success by any stretch of ones imagination. We were late off the mark, it was terribly disorganised when first implemented, but seems to to have got back on track more lately. Even today there is no social distancing at many vaccination sites, people have stood in queues for almost 8 hours over the weekend to receive the vaccine, definitely nothing to gloat about. This lady is clearly out of her depth, and it is simply staggering that she has not been replaced by someone more capable as yet.

Disappointing to see this diplomatically incompetent statement by the health minister. All vaccines available to us are contributing to the success, especially the COVAX initiative. And no offence, despite sent in millions (and with thanks to that), Chinese vaccines with their lower efficacy are actually yielding a poor return for the money spent on it and for the massive effort put into administering it. If you invest time and money on a vaccine like AstraZeneca, it will give much better returns for the money and effort. It is frustrating that SL gov is always backing the wrong horse!
